Is fragrance lurking in your soap?
Believe it or not I still get asked quit frequently what is the difference between fragrance oils and essential oils. I'll give the short answer. Fragrance oils are synthetically created aromas often combine with mineral or petroleum based carrier oils, to smell like the real thing...the real thing being the actual oil, plant, flower, grass, fruit etc. That is where the essential oil come into play. An oil extracted from the plant source directly. And of course in my case, the source being organic and non GMO. Another great topic, but too long for an IG post is not all EO's are created equal. Bummer I know. Extraction methods play a major role in their purity as well as the purity of the source from the start. For example compare this to the food you eat. You source the best organic options for you to consume and I source the absolute best organic foods for your skin. Understanding E.O's and fragrance oils can be very complex but know this.... fragrance oils pose absolutely no theraputic properties. For example Rosemary. If you compare a highly scented "rosemary" candle, soap or perfume with the Essential Oil version you will notice a flat, potent aroma when smelling the synthetic version. Not only can the aroma trigger an immediate negative response (headache, cough) they are known to be a skin and respiratory allergen. Again providing no therapuetic benefits. Smelling Rosemary EO on the other hand triggers an olfactory response affecting the hypothalamus in turn setting off positive responses throughout your entire body! It also contains antimicrobial properties, fighting Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Rosemary EO is used for a variety of skin problems, including acne, infections and eczema. Rosemary can stimulate memory and uplift your mood when inhaled. It is used for respiratory sicknesses and to soothe sore muscles and arthritis. And....believe me smells incredible. Try the rosemary and fig if you don't believe essential oils can smell better than synthetic oils. Pitch it. Your "nose" will restablish it's Flora and you will be smelling like it's the first time.
