Alessandro Sigismondi  Connecting. Empowering. Creating 📷🎬 Now: Goa. Next: Torino, Milan, London, NYC, L.A., Sardinia #theshapesofyoga #thesacredbody @layogavita

After two full days filming with @Ty landrumyoga at @himalayayogavalleygoa an amazing new “Intro to Ashtanga” course (with props, modifications of posture and so on) designed to make Ashtanga Yoga approachable and accessible to people who never tried it or have even some prejudices about it, we went at the beach at sunset and well... the shapes that started to take form in front of the camera were probably not that accessible to everyone but pretty amazing. 😏
Honestly I don’t have any problem with it and I don’t see any contradiction.
I heard about people criticizing the public display of advanced yoga postures because they might turn off people from yoga, but I personally don’t want to put it like that.
Let’s stop comparing ourselves with others. Let’s start respecting our own different journeys.
I give some examples. We’ve all seen how amazing and graceful is @mistyonpointe when she dances but still we are not ashamed to dance if we feel like.
Likewise, I am always in awe looking at the photos of @therealpeterlindbergh but still I go out with my camera and do my job, even if I’m not even 1% as good as him.
The problem lies just inside ourselves. We don’t have to do something to be the best or to mimick someone else, but just enjoying the process and embarking in our own personal journey with no expectations and an open heart.
And a little bit of inspiration might always open along the way.

Happy blood Full Moon Eclipse everyone!
If you are in Goa, see you at the ecstatic dance tonight. Not a bad way to celebrate such a powerful moment, isn’t it?

Photo montage of @pandhora513 taken at @yogauniontorino with an extraordinary image of a previous blood moon in 2015 (I really wanted to credit and tag the photographer, but I couldn’t find the name. Sorry! No copyright infringement intended and much respect for your work).

The fierce gaze of the gorgeous @alice.mastriani might say something like: “I’m ready for any challenge”.
I am ready too.
Last year has been a challenging year for sure.
On one way from a business point of view it’s been my most productive and the year when I got more incomes than ever but, due to a series of unfortunate situations, like bad accounting, not so good managing of trips and some clients, a couple of wrong investments and last but not least the theft of most of my equipment (and the necessity of buying new one) I ended up losing more money than what I got.
Not a big deal: money comes and money goes. And for sure, lesson learnt.
Maybe because I’m in India at the moment, but here among many Gods there’s Lord Ganesh, who is not only worshipped for obtaining success and money, but he’s also considered the remover of obstacles.
While maybe simple minded people might just ask for money in their prayer, I heard someone put the all thing in a different way.
That is: better not to ask Ganesh to remove our obstacles but to give us enough strength to face the obstacles when they will appear.
Because life will bring us challenges and there will be many obstacles along the way. This is sure. It would be childish to ask not to have any sort of problem. Problems are part of life.
Much better go ask to have enough strength to face any challenge, to transform every obstacle in an opportunity of growth, self empowerment and eventually success.
Or maybe, we don’t even have to ask for that strength.
We can look deeply inside of us and finding it within ourselves.
We are strong already.
We are ready for any challenge.
Happy Sunday.

This Planet, that is just an infinitesimal portion of our Universe, it’s a true miracle. A miracle that happens every day, every hour, every second in front of our eyes.
Unfortunately, most of the time we don’t even notice the miracles happening right in front of our eyes because we are too busy in our activities and distractions.
Just 5 minutes separates the first photo and the second (swipe to see it).
And 5 minutes only are enough to create such a big change. From darkness to life. Night to day. Silence to harmonies. Stillness to life.
When you think you don’t have enough time to do something you really care about, think about all what can happen in just 5 minutes.

Do you like my photos from Varanasi? They are just some shots we were doing here and then in between the photos I am preparing for my book project. This photo shown here with @deepikamehtayoga gave us further inspiration for two other concepts... but I want to keep some mystery because I can’t share that pics right now and have to keep them unpublished.
Even though, they touch a point that I feel a lot that is the connection between postural yoga and other forms of yoga.
Finding that thread, that link that starts from the body to go beyond the body.
I find those topics quiet fascinating, what about you?

My last visit to Varanasi has been that kind of trips that are so intense that you get tired, they get you high just with the travel buzz (trust me, I haven’t smoked anything) and they make you feel almost sick once you live them, but then, once you leave, they shine on in your memories. It’s been a blast spending some great time with Deepika and @markrobberds (framed in this photo) in such a unique place.
Another famous Mark (Mark Twain) nicely described Varanasi like this: “Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together.”
With such great memories I’m getting ready to live the Goan life for a couple of weeks.

Imagine more colors, more sounds, more smells, more crowds, more of anything you can even imagine and then you get an approximate idea of what is that mystical and mythical wonderland that’s called Varanasi.

Photo taken a couple of hours ago at the Ganga Aarti.

I’ve always been fascinated about cultural differences and at the same time similarities through difference.
Yesterday I posted a photo of a Mallakhamb practitioner, the traditional Indian discipline performed on a pole.
In the West, when you see a pole, you rather think of pole dance.
Mallakhamb is mostly performed by man only and it’s a very ancient and traditional practice, where the practitioner does his performance mixing yoga postures and wrestling grips.
Pole Dance, on the contrary, is also hard work, yet it’s mostly a westerner discipline and it’s commonly practiced by women, and has an interesting journey: some decades ago was widely associated to exotic dance and strip tease clubs, in the mid 2000 became a sport (they even try to move it to the Olympic Games) and now is practiced in more and more gyms worldwide, not only for fitness but also as a path of feminine empowerment.
Well, lots of differences yet lots of similarities in the shapes performed by the practitioners and in the dedication of the performers.
Of course there is no historical reference of Mallakhamb influencing pole dance (and neither vice versa) but it’s quiet interesting how things can get different connotations from one place to another of this wonderful Planet. Don’t you think?

Kukkutasana is not an easy posture even on the mat. Now imagine doing it on top of a wooden pole at 3 meters from the floor.
And now, to make it even harder, imagine doing this pose with eyes closed.
Yes, because the beautiful practitioner portrayed in this pictured is visually impaired. He’s not famous on Instagram, he doesn’t teach workshops with hundreds of people, he doesn’t live in NYC or L.A. but in my humble opinion I think he deserves his space in my upcoming book, together with some of the most popular yoga teachers in the world.
That’s why I want to make a Yoga Book, to see new faces, and to the faces we know already from a different perspective.
I want to change the perception of what is doing yoga today, what is being a yogi, and why it still worthy for a photographer to make a book about #yoga even if the hashtag has almost 61 million posts.
I know @gennywilkinsonpriest: I promised to keep the photos unpublished, but @instagram is not a publication after all? 😏 and I will share only few photos along the way: promised!
And you my friends, are you excited as I am?

My first indian day of the year. This morning I landed in Mumbai with a night flight from Italy and guess what I did?
I went directly to a place called Samarth Vyayam Mandir. It was a breath of fresh air in a world where people too often say “this is yoga” “this is not yoga” and “my yoga tradition is better than yours”.
In a very traditional old school shala setting, people of any age and abilities, from young contortionist to senior people, and even a group of amazing visually impaired teens, were practicing their discipline, alone or under the watchful eye of their teacher, doing their best and sharing beautiful energy.
The practices were anything from Mallakhamb (the traditional Indian pole), yoga, contortion, basic sun salutations and even gymnastic rings.
Everything was perfect exactly the way it was. A real organized and harmonious chaos of different bodies moving together.
It’s been a real epiphany.
Thank you @deepikamehtayoga for bringing me to that place and thank you Uday Deshpande Sir for the great welcome and for teaching so many people in such a beautiful way.
I took so many photos that I can’t share right now because I will use for my book project but of course... when I finished that, I couldn’t resist to snap this photo.
BTW @deepikamehtayoga this guy is copying your signature move 😂😏👍
