SierraButtesTrailStewardship  A non-profit making dirt magic happen in the Lost Sierra: Downieville, Graeagle, Lakes Basin and Quincy.

A very popular Lakes Basin trail is Mount Elwell. The SBTS Pro Crew is out there this week finishing up drainage work while making the trail fun, minimizing erosion, improving sustainability and keeping it rowdy all - including trail runners who are out there often doing endurance runs. Here's a look at our progress over the past few weeks. #sierratrails #lostsierra #dirtmagic

The Sierra Buttes Lookout towers high above the Lost Sierra at 8,587 feet elevation. Perched on the edge of a cliff with commanding views in all directions, the fire tower was constructed in the early 1960s, the third iteration of the original that was built in 1915. The tower was used for 30 years, but due to the tower's isolated location, delivering fuel sources like propane was extremely difficult. The expansive views from the tower were also too good, making triangulation for fire detection difficult, and combined with reduced Forest Service funding, the tower was shut down in 1995.

Although it's no longer functioning as a fire lookout, the tower remains a destination for adventurous visitors of all types. And one of the best ways to experience it is aboard the new Santa Cruz Bicycles Bronson you can win in the 5 Bucks a Foot campaign. One of our proudest achievements is giving Downieville and Quincy high school teens summer employment by completing trail maintenance on public lands while living and working in the great outdoors. Our SBTS Student Trail Crew delivers 7 weeks, 40 hours per week of trail maintenance in the #lostsierra. The DV Crew knocked out one retaining wall, four check steps, two drains and brushed 300 feet of trail in just their first week work. While the Quincy Storrie crew spent time in the Bucks Lake Wilderness in the blazing sun building a 1,000 foot reroute with multiple staircases. This is the future of stewardship – the next generation keeping it going for generations to come. #sierratrails

Last weekend over a thousand people converged on Downieville to enjoy a weekend of fun in the mountains. Our 23rd Downieville Classic was filled with events for kids, young and old, and older! We love sharing the magic of Downieville and the surrounding trails, providing a boost to the local economy and creating experiences friends and families will remember forever! #dirtmagic

TBT: For 25 years, @santacruzbicycles has been rallying down the Downieville Downhill. Our partnership started way back when the first Tazmon arrived, they are the Downieville Classic title sponsor and helped us kick start SBTS, and we proudly demo their latest carbon wonderbikes at Yuba Expeditions. Thank you Santa Cruz for 25 years of making all of this possible and putting Downieville on the map. #santacruzbicycles #dirtmagic

Thank you to our 2018 #downievilleclassic partners for making the #dirtmagic happen in the Lost Sierra. Your contributions put boots on the ground building and maintaining trails for all multiusers to enjoy! Buy their products and support these entities, Good People.

We are pleased to announce our expanded partnership with @patagonia , Inc. including environmental support grants, employee volunteer days and signing on as a major sponsor of the Downieville Classic!

Patagonia’s Reno Service Center has been a long-time supporter of SBTS, organizing volunteer work days with their employees as well as awarding annual environmental grants. In addition to being the Adopt-a-Trail sponsor of Long Lake Connector trail since 2010, last fall Patagonia awarded SBTS a $13,500 grant to conduct watershed protection and habitat restoration in the Lakes Basin region of the Plumas National Forest – Beckwourth Ranger District.

Patagonia has been supporting SBTS since our early days, and their new grants will help improve the sustainability of Lakes Basin trails for continued clean drinking water while preserving suitable habitat for wildlife.
Thank you, Patagonia!

In two weeks, things will be ramping-up for the evening‘s entertainment in downtown Downieville. Keeping with the ’new’ theme of this year‘s event, we’ll have live music from a new act, Lizano, a galactic reggae and funk fusion band. Let’s dance! #downievilleclassic

For those who love new singletrack and winning a brand new Santa Cruz Bicycles Bronson, the 5 Bucks a Foot fundraiser is back! Celebrating last year's completion of the historic Pacific Crest Trail realignment, this year's 5 Bucks a Foot will highlight the new Tower to Town route, a 7,000 vertical foot descent now featuring Sierra Buttes Overlook trail, a new section of mountain bike-legal singletrack off the top of the Sierra Buttes down to Packer Saddle, adding 1,500 vertical feet of descent to the traditional Downieville Downhill.
From now until August 20 when 5 Bucks a Foot ends, we'll cover some of the highlights and history of what's become one of the biggest mountain bike descents in North America. And just like every 5 Bucks a Foot fundraiser that crowns one very lucky winner, all money raised goes back into the trails, making more #dirtmagic for everyone! Donate through our Profile link.

Volunteer on Saturday AND Sunday at the #downievilleclassic and you will receive a free, nifty #bigtruckbrand and SBTS collaboration hat that's really similar this one. You also receive food and a cold beverage on both days, an event t-shirt and discounted camping. We’ve got a lot of fun times coming your way so don’t miss out. Remind friends and family members who are not racing that volunteering at the Classic is just a fun as racing. Go to the volunteer link on the Downieville Classic website to sign-up to volunteer on both days.

It’s Hump Day and if you are racing the Classic soon you will be railing this hump on the Gold Valley Rim Trail - the new singletrack featured for Saturday’s cross country race that removes the crappy fire road climb to Baby Heads. If you have not ridden this trail, you definitely need to get to #yubaexpeditions, shuttle up and ride it. This new section is a game changer featuring punchy lung-searing climbs, rally descents over rocky gnar gnar and pristine high alpine views that could distract your laser focus on the trail. The #downievilleclassic is just a few weeks away…are you ready? #sierratrails #lostsierra #dirtmagic

See these Good People? This is John and Terri Smith from Hangtown Electric who sponsored last weekend's trail day on the Gold Valley Rim Trail. This trail is now completely dialed and ready for the cross country race which will feature this brand spanking new singletrack for the first time ever. If you haven't ridden it yet, you should so you are fully prepared for the stellar views and lung searing elevation gain beyond Packer Saddle. Your race entry fees, money spent during the Downieville Classic at our beer garden and merchandise you purchase goes toward constructing and maintaining #lostsierra trails like this one built by #sierratrails. Come up and volunteer if racing is not your thing and ride this awesome singletrack before for race goes off. Be like the Smith's who have been volunteering at the Classic and helping us work on trails for well over a decade. Register to volunteer on the #downievilleclassic website and thank you for your support!
