"Time really is one big continuous cloth, no? We habitually cut out pieces of time to fit us, we tend to fool ourselves into thinking that time is our size, but it really goes on and on."
~ Murakami, A wild sheep chase

Wishing time would stop and become my size in the Kitzbuehelen Alps 😍And you, what's time looking like for you these days?

My latest blog post is one really close to my heart - dedicated to the place that changed my life 6 years ago... Read "I Love Spiti": How Travellers Must Save India's Surreal Himalayan Desert ✍🏼 link in my bio or at the-shooting-star.com.
.
.
An excerpt:
"The idea occurred to me on the shared taxi ride from Manali to Spiti. We were awaiting our turn as each vehicle ahead of us tried to manoeuvre the stream flowing past the road. Outside, I could see mounds of trash along the river bed. Just then, a fellow passenger opened a candy bar and threw the plastic wrapper right out of the window! It angered me and my other co-passengers, and we started explaining to him why he should keep his trash in his pocket till he finds a dustbin.
.
If you keep throwing wrappers like this, there’ll be no mountains left. All we’ll have are mountains of plastic. And as I told him that, it struck me that we should create exactly that – an artwork of a mountain of plastic to illustrate what we are doing to our mountains.
.
The artwork idea emerged into a lifesize β€œI Love Spiti” installation after a discussion with @spitiecosphere πŸ€” All around the world, people take photographs with β€œI Love New York” and β€œI Love Amsterdam”. We decided to join the bandwagon, except that our β€œI Love Spiti” is made entirely of discarded plastic bottles, that we gathered from across Kaza and even retrieved from the dumping ground! The heart alone is made of 300+ bottles, and everyone who takes a photo with the installation pledges to say no to plastic bottled water, atleast while in Spiti."
.
.
Inaugurated at an InstaMeet (#ilovespiti at #wim17) at 12,000+ feet in Kaza, by the King of Spiti! Urge you to share this pledge against plastic bottled water with your family, friends, social networks and whoever you can!

Misconceptions be damned. I passed through Austria years ago, on my first ever trip to Europe... and heard from people along the way that Austria is nothing special. It's a lesser version of Germany they said, it's nothing unique they said, there's nothing to experience they said. And silly me, I believed them. So much that I spent a couple of days in Innsbruck and never went back. .
.
Years later, I'm falling head over heels in love with the Tirol region of Austria. The spectacular snow-capped mountains, the refreshing humour and warmth of the locals I've met so far, the hiking and mountain biking trails, drinks made of elderflower and wild mountain herbs, traditional songs that speak of the hard life in the mountains in olden days... .
.
I usually hate group trips, but travelling with my fellow travel bloggers - @smaracuja @afterglobedk (go follow!) and hanging out with the people of Tirol has been incredibly fun so far. .
.
Misconceptions be damned. We need to travel, because as Aldous Huxley once said, to travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries πŸ€”

Servus from Tirol, Austria πŸ‘‹πŸΌ
.
.
The last two days have been packed with insights and discussions about travel blogging and its evolution. This is my third time at the Social Travel Summit organised by @iambassadornet - and spending time with some of the world's most influential and creative travel bloggers always inspires me to up my game. Hotel A-Rosa πŸ‘†πŸΌ, built like a Tirolean castle in the scenic little town of Kitzbuehel @kitzbuehel_tirol in the Tirolean mountains is also, by far, the most scenic conference venue yet 😍
.
.
My key takeaway this time: to slow down, block out the noise and focus on content that ONLY you can offer πŸ€”
.
.
Now it's time to get outdoors and explore the Austrian Alps in Tirol, with @visitaustria @visittirol πŸ‘£ Have you been to this part of the world? Got tips? .

Last week, I travelled 25 hours non stop to get from Spiti to Delhi - 12 hours by shared taxi to Manali, then 13 hours by overnight bus. It was the only way I could make it for my flight to the Maldives, and all I dreamt about on that unending bumpy journey were the perfect white sand beaches I'd be lazying on... But just when the bus rolled into Delhi, in my zombie-like state, I received an email saying my flight to Male couldn't be sorted πŸ™„
.
.
I guess a couple of years ago, I would've pulled my hair out and bawled, but looking at that email, I just sighed and decided to treat myself to a nice night's stay in Delhi. Shit happens, I told myself. The only shittier thing was, I had already arranged accommodation for my stay on an island AND an onward flight to Austria for another conference. .
.
Since I couldn't fly the next morning to Male as planned, I decided to fly to Mumbai instead (who needs the Maldives when you have Juhu beach right? πŸ˜‚) and indulge in some vegan food. I finally flew to the Maldives just for a day, spoke at the conference - an insightful gathering of travel writers and the tourism industry, and took my long overnight flight to Austria... probably setting a record for the shortest stay ever in this island nation, 26 hours 🀣
.
.
But oh well, atleast I learnt something new about myself. I think I'm inching closer towards stoicism. I wasn't super angry, or super sad that my trip got canned after I travelled 25 hours to make it. I wasn't super stressed about not having anywhere to go last week. I wasn't super bummed that I only got 26 hours in the Maldives. I feel like I'll go back when it's time to live out my island dream 🏝
.
.
I guess I'm sharing this because I want to emphasise that shit happens. On the road, at home, in life. We've got to take it in our stride and move on... because the road, home and life would be so darn boring if shit didn't happen πŸ˜‰

That's me, speaking at a panel at the World Travel Writers Conference in the Maldives yesterday! πŸ‘½
.
.
We discussed the importance of storytelling, in travel writing in general, and particularly for a tourism destination like the Maldives. We spoke of how Maldives, which was once only a luxury destination for the ultra rich, has now become affordable to low budget travellers through low cost flights and guesthouses / home stays on local islands - which I think would also be a much more authentic and immersive way to experience island life here. .
.
Besides meeting bloggers and instagrammers from around the world, one of the highlights of the conference was meeting @somewheresalty - possibly the first female Maldivian travel blogger, solo traveller, surfer and surf photographer - who is currently living in a rented house on a little island in the Maldives! Totally inspired to do the same myself when I go back... go follow her adventures! πŸπŸ„πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
.
.
And tell me, how do you make your travel choices? What makes you pick one destination / experience over another when you travel?
.
.
Thanks to @maldives_tv @wtwc_maldives for inviting me! Photo thanks to @jj_yosh πŸ™
.
.
PS: This was the first conference I've attended where water was served in glass bottles, not plastic. Commendable!

"In my errant life I roamed
To learn the secrets of women and men,
Of gods and dreams.
I've known all the countries of our world,
I've lived a thousand lives:
Many lives I lived in love,
Other lives I squandered.
For in my life I never traveled,
All I did was wander."
~ Roman Payne, The Wanderess .

Wandering in one of Spiti's most stunning, most remote villages. .

I guess the next best thing to cycling in the Trans-Himalayan mountain desert of Spiti is riding in the back of a camper truck, feeling so damn insignificant in the vast mountains, holding on to dear life on sharp curves, hearing the music of the wind and the rumbling of the engine and the gushing river - the most exhilarating kind of road trip music πŸ˜‰πŸ‘£

Excited to share that I'm now the proud owner of a GoPro Hero 5 Black, in collaboration with @goproin 😎

I'm starting to believe that there are some people you are destined to meet. .
.
Ishita, the founder of Spiti Ecosphere, grew up in the house diagonally opposite to mine in Dehradun. Yet, strangely enough, we met for the first time in Spiti, when I went to volunteer travel there in 2011. She was 24 when she first started working in this remote Trans-Himalayan desert, and I was 23 when I first met her. Now that I think about it, it wasn't just traveling alone in Spiti that changed something in me. It was also meeting the girl who grew up on the same street as me, in the same town as me; if she could choose such a different path in life, why couldn't I?
.
.
Six years later, her conviction to live in Spiti for 6 months every year, her organisation's work to help make life more sustainable in the upper villages, her ability to stay calm when shit hits the fan... six years later, I still feel like that 23-year-old in awe of the girl who grew up in the house diagonally opposite to mine. .
.
Yeap, I'm starting to believe that destiny sometimes conspires to make us meet our neighbors in the most unlikely places... when we most need it. Has that ever happened with you?
.
.
PS: How's that for my first Boomerang? πŸ˜‰
