According to the Atlantic slave trade over 200,000 african slaves were brought to mexico. The african slave trade to mexico was at its height between 1580 and 1640, when nearly 2 out 3 africans that were brought brought to spanish colonies ended up in mexico.
They were brought to be servants, body guards and maids in mexico city and work on plantations and in mines in other parts of mexico along side indigenous people. There were even big slave revolts and community of run away slaves that were set up in states like oxaca and guerro. One of the most famous of these revolts was led by Gaspar Yanga.(1st pic)
Although in comparison to the white, meztizo, and indigenous populations in Mexico, Afro mexicans have played an integral part of mexican history especially the mexican revolution. Mexicos first president Vicente Guerror (3rd pic) was a black man.This one fact that many mexicans arenr even taught in school. Many of his pictures are even changed to make him look more european.
There are over 1,000,000 people of african descent in mexico. Most however have been absorbed into the mestizo culture. The black people has been hidden and silenced by mexican culture and society. However now its experiencing a rival of pride and culture.
