We are having a blast teaching these wonderful kids this week! Introducing Our Shining Stars 2017 Workshop Teachers and Staff! 💛💫 {Irishia Hubbard- Founder, Artistic Director, and Teacher} Irishia Hubbard is a Lancaster, South Carolina native that began her dance training at the age of three. She has been trained in many styles including tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, contemporary, West African, modern, and flamenco. Also notably, she has appeared on tv shows such as America's Got Talent and  Paula Abdul’s Live to Dance. Other influential choreographers that she has worked with include, Donald McKayle, Sheron Wray, Shaun Boyle, Lisa Clark Schemling, and Greg Chapkis. Irishia has emerged as a choreographer and had created work for various studio performances including Barebones Dance Theater’s Unplugged. She has choreographed musical theater plays for Vanden High, Grease (2011) and Little Shop of Horror (2012). As well as choreographed for music concerts, including the sci-fi rock opera Zolk Tizzer. Furthermore, she has premiered her newest work “Sacred Matters” at both the Blaktina and Nebula Dance festivals. Her choreography has been praised by prestigious dance critics such as Jeff Slayton. Irishia graduated in 2016 from the University of California, Irvine with a B.A. in Educational Sciences and B.F.A. in Dance Choreography. While completing her undergraduate studies she was awarded the first scholarship by modern dance legend Donald McKayle, for her choreography and dance performance. Concurrent with her achievements in performance and choreography, Irishia has maintained a deep passion for dance pedagogy made evident in her creation of Shining Stars in 2015. She has been teaching throughout California for over 6 years and currently teaches at West Coast Dance Project and Focus Dance Center for youth classes and competitive teams. Her other roles include choreographing for Orange County based dance company JazzXchange and as Artistic Director for Shining Stars.

Introducing Our Shining Stars 2017 Workshop Teachers and Staff! 💛💫{Nicole River- Co-Founder and Administrative Director} Nicole Rivor is a dancer-singer who studied ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop, tap, salsa, rumba, and improvisation. She attended UC Irvine, where she danced in the department’s two performing ensembles: Etude Ensemble and Insight Jazz Ensemble. She graduated cum laude from UC Irvine with a BFA in Dance Performance and a minor in Anthropology in June 2015. After graduation she began dancing with JazzXchange, a company based in OC that keeps jazz alive through connecting to movement from Europe and Africa. She also dances with Multiplex Dance Company, a modern dance company in LA that integrates athletic and acrobatic movement with digital media and electronic music, as well as the Hubbard Collective, which is a modern-fusion dance company that works to combine concert and commercial dance elements. She is the Co-Founder and Administrator for the “Shining Stars” Dance Organization, which is an outreach organization that provides free dance programs for underserved youth in OC. She teaches at My Gym Children’s Fitness Center and Newport Dance Theatre, and is a substitute teacher at several dance studios in OC.

Introducing Our Shining Stars 2017 Workshop Teachers and Staff! 💛💫 {Dante Puleio- On-Site Mentor and Graduate of UCI's MFA Program} Dante Puleio is a Jersey boy. He began dancing at 19 and is proud to be a former member of the José Limón Dance Company. He recently received his MFA from University of California, Irvine and may soon be a professor at a university near you. In 1999 he graduated with a BFA from the University of the arts in Philadelphia and a year later joined the Limón Co. After several years with Limón, he took a hiatus to explore his first love, musical theatre, and perform in national and international tours of Broadway shows such as "The Who's Tommy" and the "Wizard of Oz". He also got the chance to dance with his step mom on Lifetime TV's dance competition "Your Mama Don't Dance". He rejoined Limon in 2008 as principal and soloist. In 2014 he moved to CA to pursue his MFA. He now spends his time teaching, setting Limon work, and choreographing at festivals, intensives, dance studios, universities and companies around the world.

Introducing Our Shining Stars 2017 Workshop Teachers and Staff! 💛💫 {Edgar Aguirre- Teacher} Edgar Aguirre is a current third year in the pursuit of a BFA in Choreography and a BA in Education Sciences. Edgar discovered Hip-hop dance in the San Francisco Bay Area, growing up after emigrating from Guatemala. Most of Edgar’s dance training comes form UCI’s dance department, learning from peers, faculty and guest artists as well as performing in their work and other festivals around Southern California. Edgar’s biggest accomplishments in college include traveling to Scotland to perform in an international arts festival, traveling to Panama with UCI’s Movement Exchange to teach at orphanages and learn from local teachers and finally, being a part of Donald McKayle’s Étude Ensemble. Edgar looks forward to performing in Donald McKayle’s upcoming repertory concert as well as to continue learning from him. This summer Edgar traveled to Italy on a performance tour and choreography project. He looks forward to participating in the Shining Starts program at UCI when he returns.

Introducing Our Shining Stars 2017 Workshop Teachers and Staff! 💛💫 {Shannon O'Connor- Teacher and Vice President of Administration} Shannon is currently a third year at UC Irvine as an English major, Spanish minor and hails from Oceanside, California. Shannon has been dancing for seven years beginning when she was 12 with learning hip hop combinations through Youtube. When she became involved in her high school dance program in her sophomore year, Shannon has become fluent in choreographing and dancing the genres of jazz and modern and has performed in multiple shows throughout the years she has been in the program. During her time in UCI, Shannon has continued to be involved in the dance department by taking multiple dance classes every quarter. Her strongest genres are Jazz and Hip Hop and in the past year Shannon has developed skills in break-dancing as well. She is a part of the Administration team of "Shining Stars" as the Social Media and Communications Manager and will also be an Apprentice Teacher during the Summer 2017 program.

Introducing Our Shining Stars 2017 Workshop Teachers and Staff! 💛💫 {Jacob Boarnet- Teacher and Administrative Assistant} Jacob is currently heading into his second year as a double major in Dance and Criminology, Law, and Society with a minor in Psychology and Social Behavior. Growing up in Irvine, he established a passion for dance at an early age that was paired with a love for musical theater. At the age of 15, Jacob decided he wanted to inspire others the way he was motivated by his mentors, so he began teaching. Jacob is so honored to be able to be a part of the Shining Stars organization, not only as a teacher, but also as an administrative member, and he is looking forward to getting to meet and encourage the Shining Stars students while teaching ballet, jazz, tap, and musical theater this summer!

Introducing Our Shining Stars 2017 Workshop Teachers and Staff! 💛💫 {Leslie Ou- Teacher} My name is Leslie and I graduated in 2016 with a criminology degree at the University of California Irvine. I started dancing in my 3rd year of college, about 3 years ago, so I have not danced for that long. However, I really enjoy dancing because music and dancing makes me feel good! I joined Shining Stars because I wanted to show others how wonderful music and dancing can be, and how being able to express yourself through dance energizes you! I look forward to both learning and teaching everyone!

Introducing Our Shining Stars 2017 Workshop Teachers and Staff! 💛💫 {Madeleine Schreifels- Teacher and Staff Coordinator} Madeleine Schreifels is a 4th year Campuswide Honors undergraduate majoring in Dance and French at UC Irvine. With over 15 years of dance experience, she is the choreographer for the Ventura Unified School District Company Show Choir, and is an instructor at Santa Barbara Dance Arts. She is a member of Dr. Sheron Wray's Insight Jazz Dance Ensemble, as well as a member of the Dance Department's Chair Student Advisory Committee. She has been recognized for her academic and artistic achievements as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and as a recipient of the Cloud Hsueh Foundation Scholarship. She is thrilled to serve as Shining Star's Staff Coordinator, and to be teaching tap and jazz in this summer's program.

Introducing Our Shining Stars 2017 Workshop Teachers and Staff! 💛💫 {Diana Rodriguez- Teacher} Diana is a Santa Ana College graduate transferring to CSUF to complete her major in communication studies. She has always loved to dance and perform in front of her family since she was young. At the age of 10, she began to dance as a cheerleader then was a gymnast. She started learning ballet when she was in high school and performed her own dance routines in high school showcases. During college, she took more dance classes while at home she learned Zumba, break-dancing, and hip hop on her own. Diana wants to continue her journey in teaching dance while going to school. She works hard everyday and tries to improve herself as a dancer, while aspires to still be a businesswoman for social media marketing. This will be Diana’s first time being a part of the “Shining Stars”team and has brought along more teacher assistants from Santa Ana and got more  families from her community to sign-up for the program. Creating a positive impact and role-model to children is very important to her and wants to help them achieve their dreams while having fun doing it.
