Gender equality is one of the goals that our society has not yet achieved. Gender inequality is not simply about prejudice against women; real feminists acknowledge this. This is an issue that we are all facing and as we are a part of society, we should be at the very least concerned about this problem. It begins with the problem of stereotyping that leads to the downgrading as well as judgmental remarks made towards both sexes. “Real men are ‘tough’, classy ladies are ‘gentle’.” This statement is a blurred definition of the characteristics of proper men and women. It is an example of a very problematic stereotype which has caused men and women alike to feel “obligated” to follow along. For instance, men being honest about the abuse they have experienced would be deemed as weak or women standing up to what they believe in would be noted as hardheaded and of no manners. In other words, is it about men having to be in control while women have to be gentle enough to listen and tag along? Real men know how to respect a woman and treat them right even if it means not being in control and a woman of class holds to their principles and values. There is a broad more range of checklist to be considered proper and the generalisation that men should be tough and women should be gentle is disturbingly ignorant.

FEMINISM IS A MOVEMENT ADVOCATING FOR BOTH GENDERS. “Men don’t have the benefits of equality, either. We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes, but I can see that they are, and that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence. If men don’t have to be aggressive in order to be accepted, women won’t feel compelled to be submissive. If men don’t have to control, women won’t have to be controlled. Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong. It is time that we all perceive gender on a spectrum, instead of two sets of opposing ideals. If we stop defining each other by what we are not, and start defining ourselves by who we are, we can all be freer. It’s about freedom.” - Emma Watson, UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador

There have been many misconceptions when the topic of feminism arises. The most common one being the belief that feminism is an extremist movement in the female pursuit of power and matriarchy. This belief has caused men and women alike to disregard the idea of feminism. Even more sadly, this false thought may have resulted in more women being discouraged from participating in the feminism movement. FEMINISM IS NOT ABOUT ONE GENDER BEING ABOVE THE OTHER GENDER. IT IS ABOUT THE JOURNEY TO FIGHT FOR EQUAL RIGHTS.

We have moved on far from the old ages where people exclude women from meetings as well as banning entry to participate in political matters. Yet gender inequality still occurs in many places be it in education, health, identity, work, violence or even today’s very own political world. This threat is very much real in our daily lives and it happens ever so frequently that we do not realise them be it catcalling a passing lady, making dirty innuendos or even to more serious cases such as disregarding female voices in the political court.

With #HeForShe, we are contributing to the promotion of gender equality. Feminism is not an act to show female superiority but it is a movement to gain the rights that women deserve and the willingness to carry even burdens of responsibilities.
And to all men, do not let the term feminism discourage you from participating if you believe in gender equality. FEMINISM IS NOT DETRIMENTAL TO MEN. Consequently, it might even benefit them. We are all fighting for gender equality and if we succeed, we would all experience freedom from general stereotypes. “If men don’t have to be aggressive in order to be accepted, women won’t feel compelled to be submissive,” quotes Emma Watson, UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador. This, is true feminism.

There are many ways in which we can participate in the #HeForShe movement as individuals (http://www.heforshe.org/-/media/heforshe/files/actionkits/launch_action_kits/heforshe_action_kit_individuals.pdf?la=en). Remember that a small act, when done repeatedly, will have a magnificent impact.

Together, we fight for equality.
