Why do this Isometric Towel Extension? Because being strong isn't just about the big muscles performing a bench press or squat. You have to give credit to the supporting muscles, too.

The neck can flex, extend, laterally flex (bend sideways), and rotate, just like the rest of the spine.

What I'm demonstrating here is an Isometric hold of the neck in extension and flexion. I'm extending my neck with FORCE while pulling on the towel. This activation contracts the muscles without lengthening or shortening all the while strengthening the sternocleidomastoid muscles on the left and right side of your neck. The same thing is happening in the picture on the right except my head is in flexion, instead of extension. It activates the same muscles, including the trapezius (traps) and the lower back.

This exercise can tone the arms and shoulders as well. Also, stand upright and tighten your core.

Substitute your hands if you dont have a towel. Perform the same exercises while laterally flexing your neck. Use Caution. 10 second holds 10 times. Rest 15 sec between sets.

Most people will have at least one of these issues: Tight, overlifted pecs that pull the shoulders and upper back forward. A rigid thoracic spine that can't extend. A weak core and inflexible hips, knees, and ankles.

And most people sit hunched forward all day, then go into the gym and train their mirror muscles. If your torso is in constant flexion, your shoulders and scapulae are pulled forward, making it damn near impossible for your shoulders to be comfortable and strong when your arms are behind your head.

The overhead squat can help your body learn how to extend. Your thoracic spine and abdominal muscles must learn how to move backward with as much ease as they flex forward. If your thoracic spine and core can be strong and in a good position no matter what you're doing, you'll have better success in all of your lifts.

Start with basic positioning and an exercise band to increase mobility for the upper body.

Do active stretching and foam rolling to warm the muscles around the groind, hips, knees and ankles. Use an exercise band for lateral stepping.
