Yemen: Displaced in Sana'a's Old City
.
Siblings Mohammed, Batool and Luai Ali Zaid walk on the rubble of their neighbor’s house which was destroyed by conflict in the Old City of Sana’a. The children fled the area with their family after the incident but have since returned. They walk among the ruins, reminiscing the time they used to play with their now-deceased friends. With violence and loss a daily reality for Yemen’s civilians, mental health and psychological support needs continue to exacerbate in #Yemen, particularly among those displaced and vulnerable, including children.

Forced to flee her home in Sana’a governorate’s Bani Matar district after it was battered by intensified hostilities, 70 year old widow, Qafia, passes time at the entrance of a small house she rents in Sana’a’s Old City. Since the beginning of the conflict in March 2015, more than ten per cent of Yemen’s entire population have been forced to flee their homes for safety. Qafia is one of two million displaced in #Yemen, waiting for the war to end.

Waiting for customers in Sanaa's Old City, Mahmood Mohammed (left) supports five members of his family with the modest income he receives as a porter at the market. He is forced to prioritise rent and food and struggles to afford essential medication for two of his children who suffer from chronic illnesses. Adequate health care is out of reach for more than 16 million people in #Yemen with medical equipment and medications also in short supply.

Though lucky to escape Yemen’s embattled governorate of Taizz, Ahmed Saleh Ali sits on a rooftop terrace in Sana’a’s Old City, longing to return home. He arrived in Sana’a more than a year ago together with his six children after his home was shelled. Away from home and unable to find work he is among more than 22 million people in #Yemen now in need of humanitarian assistance.

Sisters Eman and Amani Asabah play among rubble and debris in the Old City of Sanaa. After their house was destroyed in the war they fled with their family from the Old City but have since returned to live in a dwelling near their former home. In addition to two million currently displaced in Yemen, there are one million displaced now attempting to return back to their homes.

Do have a look at our UNHCR #Yemen photo essay on Al Jazeera English today, focusing on the life of displaced Yemenis who have sought shelter in Sana'a's beautiful antiquated Old City. Link here: http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/inpictures/yemen-displaced-sanaas-city-180213084012975.html

33 year old Mohammed Ali unloads jerry cans from his wheelbarrow in the Old City of Sana'a which will supply his family with safe water. He fled with ten family members from Yemen’s northern province of Sa’ada, after his house was destroyed. Yemen, one of world’s most water scarce countries, has been facing the world’s worst cholera outbreak, an infectious disease transmitted through contaminated food and water. Limited access to clean water, sanitation and health care has fuelled the epidemic, which resulted in more than a million suspected cholera cases being reported across the country.

This beautiful photo taken by my photographer friend Mohammed of 2 year old Fatemah offering her father Khaled some water is one of my favourites, illustrating humanity in a time of war.
.
Father and daughter were forced to flee for their lives from Taizz, a governorate on #Yemen's Red Sea coast that has been a flashpoint of conflict for almost three years now.
.
They are among 10% of Yemen's population now displaced because of conflict.
.
Fatemah is only two years of age but has spent all her life so far living and coping under war. And despite the difficult and inhumane conditions around her, she's not only learnt how to survive through conflict and exile but how to be compassionate and loving despite.

Somewhat surreally I was on one of these exactly this time three weeks ago, carried down three flights of stairs by some of my colleagues on my way to Sana'a's Saudi German hospital after a bit of an injury and the paramedic suspected a fracture.
.
I was a bit tired and hazy but what I'll never forget seeing is the dire state of some of the patients I saw at the hospital and also the dedication of Yemen's health professionals. Less than half of Yemen's health facilities are functioning as a result of the conflict, and many doctors and nurses haven't been able to receive their salaries so are working for months on end without being paid.
.
Hospitals are over-capacitated, medical staff are overwhelmed and people are literally dying or suffering as a result of a lack of access to health care and medication.
.
Sorry that I have to keep on posting realities like this but I really want you all to know how much #Yemen and Yemenis are enduring because what's happening here is a shame and a blight on humanity.

Rukaya with her daughters Remas and Malak, in the one room they share in a former health clinic that has now been converted into a collective residence for 24 other displaced Yemeni families.
.
Continually exposed to constant warfare, Rukaya says she suffers from anxiety and depression, feeling both trapped and isolated, unable to change her predicament or return home. The mother of two and her children survive mainly on black tea and bread, complemented by food rations donated by other charitable organisations.
.
"I feel claustrophobic here. I hate this place. I hate it so much. I just want to go home," she says.

Little Reemas from Dhamar, #Yemen who had to flee with her family to Sana'a after conflict escalated in their hometown. She now lives in a former health clinic that has been converted into a collective shelter for 24 other displaced Yemeni families. She and her mother and sister live in one room. No jobs, no money, no health care and not enough food.

Tele last evening. Speaking to Al Jazeera English on the crisis in #Yemen. In-depth reporting on #Yemen by the brilliant @mohammedjamjoom.

Invited by our very lovely and hospitable Yemeni colleagues to a delicious end-of-week seafood lunch. 🍤 🐟 🦀 🐟🦐

Just hearting traditional #Yemeni jewellery... this one is apparently a hybrid Yemeni Bedouin/Jewish design. The bag is also made in #Yemen by conflict-affected female artisans who are using their talents to help their families and communities. (Planning to do a story about this later...)
.
Meanwhile it's still a little crisp #today but the sun is out and the season is slowly starting to change.

Not a well known fact but it does get cold in #Yemen during winter. Temperatures at their coldest can dip to zero degrees Celsius across a number of governorates. For those displaced, many of whom are living in makeshift shelters, the harsh weather adds to hardship, leaving them cold and susceptible to illness.
.
To help those most vulnerable cope during the cold season, we -UNHCR, are providing winter cash grants to help almost 130,000 displaced Yemenis keep safe and warm.

For me personally, one of the best programs that we run in #Yemen are the community and family centres for refugees, displaced Yemenis and their local communities. The centres provide a whole suite of protection and assistance services including legal assistance and counselling, psychosocial support, services for survivors of gender based violence, cash and material assistance, and some centres also offer educational and recreational activities, as well as livelihood and vocational trainings. For those forcibly displaced and living under conflict, a visit to the centres for assistance, or in the case of children- to learn and play, provides much needed respite.

Invited as guest speaker by NYU - Abu Dhabi to lecture a class this morning on #Yemen and refugee protection via Skype. Truly encouraged by their interest in the humanitarian situation in Yemen and on refugee issues.

Happy new year to you all. Hope you're ushering it in with your nearests and dearests. May 2018 be kind, generous, beautiful and bursting at the seams with peace, love and great memories.
