USA Gymnastics announced yesterday that they have cut ties with Karolyi Ranch—the facility in Hunstville, Texas that has served as a training center for the country's elite gymnasts for over 30 years. This news comes just a few days after Olympian Simone Biles released a statement alleging that team doctor Larry Nassar sexually abused her. Nassar now stands accused of sexually abusing more than 140 girls and women throughout his career, including Biles' Team USA teammate Aly Raisman, who, in court testimony today, said that USA Gymnastics is "rotting from the inside." This week Biles also called for the shutdown of Karolyi Ranch, where much of the abuse was said to have taken place: “It breaks my heart even more to think that as I work towards my dream of competing in Tokyo 2020, I will have to continually return to the same training facility where I was abused,” she said. —
Absolutely nothing can make up for the years of unchecked abuse inflicted on young girls during this shameful and inexcusable history, but we're heartened to know that no one will have to return to the scene of this trauma.
