April 25 is World Penguin Day, timed to coincide with the annual northward march to the sea of Antarctic penguins, as autumn edges toward winter in that part of the world. According to earthsky.org, Antarctica has 12 million penguins and 5 penguin species. In these photos taken at Salisbury Plain Bear South Georgia by Florida Sales Manager David Rhea, there are 250,000 Emperors at this spot.
Emperor penguins are super freedivers. They can hold their breath for an amazing 20 minutes! They dive under the ice in the cold oceans around Antarctica when they hunt for food. Penguins’ unique colouring is called counter-shading. To predators looking down from above, the penguins’ black backs help them blend into the dark ocean. To predators looking up from underwater, the penguin’s white belly blends in against the light sky and snow. Penguins in Antarctica have declined significantly in recent years, where warming has occurred on the Antarctic Peninsula.
