608p050317 - Looking out towards Isle of Skye and the only bridge that connects it to the mainland. Skye Bridge was built in 1995. Before then the only way to get to Skye was by boat. #latergram #makescottscottishagain #isleofskye #skyebridge #scotland #skye #landscape

524p050317 - Eilean Donan Castle with Isle of Skye in the background. The castle was a Clan Mackenzie stronghold but was actually destroyed in 1719 by government ships as a result of the Jacobite rebellion. But now it’s considered the most photographed castle in Scotland for obvious reasons. You pass it right before you get to Skye. They even had a traditional bagpiper at the gate, which helped make this the most quintessentially Scottish moment of the whole trip. #latergram #makescottscottishagain #scotland #eileandonan #castle #fairytale #landscape #whencanimovein #highlands

445p050317 - The terrain starts to get more rugged, sparse, and unforgiving as we start to get closer to Skye. #makescottscottishagain #scotland #landscape #latergram

221p050317 - The Jacobite Memorial Cairn. Lots of people still come and leave flowers and wreaths and other totems to pay their respects to ancestors who fought and died for Scottish independence at Culloden. #latergram #makescottscottishagain #culloden #scotland

228p050317 - Before leaving Inverness, we visited the Culloden Battlefield. In 1741, this is where the Jacobites, consisting of numerous Highland clans with the support of The French, clashed with the English government in the last of many battles for Scottish independence. The Jacobites got squashed. Part of the reason was the Jacobites tried to be slick and sneak up on the English at night when they least expected it and were drunk... except they got lost in the dark woods and exhausted themselves from marching around aimlessly, which made them an easy target when they eventually returned to Culloden.

The Red Flags represent the positions of the English government forces; while Blue flags represent the positions of the Jacobites.

832p050217 - Streets of Inverness. By the River Ness which runs to Loch Ness. Whole lotta Ness. #latergram #makescottscottishagain #sunset #scotland #funset

837p050217 - When we arrived in Inverness we walked through town to @rocpool for the best meal we would have in Scotland. I love exploring a new unfamiliar city on foot, and I fell in love with Inverness almost immediately walking through the little neighborhoods and shops. Inverness is up there in the Highlands, pretty much on the same parallel as southern Alaska. I would totally live here. #makescottscottishagain #scotland #latergram #inverness

652p050217 - More springtime Scottish roadside views on the drive to Inverness. #latergram #makescottscottishagain #scotland #scotlandsbeauty #scottish

652p050217 - Back on the tiny highland roads of Scotland en route to Inverness after a stop at Glenfiddich and a drive-by of Macallan. The Macallan Distillery was under tons of construction and looked like an industrial park. Glenfiddich was way nicer. Still getting used to driving on the other side of the car and road, but starting to get it together. #latergram #makescottscottishagain #scotland #road #ontheroadagain #scotlandsbeauty
