The Christmas season is a good opportunity to look beyond your own nose. While "Complete Food" is revolutionizing our eating habits, the "Effective Altruism" movement redefines how we help others.
Effective Altruism briefly explained:
Most forms of do-gooding start out with a What (“I want to promote microfinance!”), move to a How (“maybe I should do a sponsored marathon?”) and simply take the Why for granted
(“because of course microfinance is good!”).
Effective altruism, in contrast, starts with a Why and a How, and lets them determine the What.
Our brain is otherwise too easily tempted by romanticized stories rather than supporting things that actually make a difference.
The basic assumption behind it is simple: Helping more is better than helping less.
So if I want to donate to help others, how can I be sure that my money will make a difference? And where can I use it to help as many and much as possible?
The same question was asked by the founders of GiveWell.
The process of looking at evidence of different interventions and their cost-effectiveness has led to a small list of "top charities" that they recommend. Often, even with the most conservative and skeptical estimates, these charities are many times better than traditional charities.
"Make your dollar go further" - you do not necessarily have to donate more, but where you donate to can make a gigantic difference.
Not only people need help:
The equivalent of GiveWell for helping animals is called Animal Charity Evaluators.
Of course, time can also be used in different ways and most of our lives we work in a profession.
The organization 80,000 Hours (the number of hours an average person works) has researched exactly how we can do as much good as possible with our careers.
We all have the potential to make the world a better place tomorrow than it is today!
