Sarica  (rhymes with America) ✍🏼📓🐾 creating calm through journaling, lettering & drawing 👇🏼 shop, youtube & more

“In art, you don’t win or lose, you win or learn.” // I don’t know where I heard that before, but that’s what I told myself before trying gouache for the first time. It took me three trepidatious days to finish painting these landscape studies in between preparing for the reopening of my shop. Although I totally made some rookie mistakes (like not adding enough water which caused some layers to crack 😬) I’m okay with the end results and the lessons that I learned! Are there any new mediums you’d like to try in your sketchbook or art journal?

This is a repost from my last day taking over @sakuraofamerica’s Instagram in which I demonstrated lettering with Soufflé pens on metal. You might think I’m weird but my favorite part was watching the ink dry 😂 And since it’s me, of course I had to write something encouraging… or is it subliminal BTS messaging? You decide 😉

My original caption: “Hello! It’s @saricastudio with one final lettering video. I’m finishing off my takeover with Soufflé pens! These pens are so fun to use on ceramic, glass, acetate, vellum, and coated paper. I thought it’d be fun to try it on metal today! I’ve had a blast sharing messages of self affirmation with you all during my takeover. Remember, it’s okay to push yourself to improve, but if self critique becomes too harsh, counter it with a healthy dose of self love 😊 Thank you Sakura of America for the opportunity to share my love for lettering with so many awesome creative people! 🥰”

I wanted to create some urban landscape studies after doing all the nature ones. So, I decided to paint some of my favorite bridges in Pittsburgh! 💛🖤 The top painting is the Andy Warhol Bridge which is probably the one I have walked the most to go to the Andy Warhol Museum (when I used to work there). The second one is the Smithfield Street Bridge which is the oldest bridge in Pittsburgh and one of my favorites because of its wavy, intricate design. The last one is the Fort Duquesne Bridge; it reminds me of lazy summer days when I lived closer to downtown and could walk to Point State Park with my husband and dog (this is before we got our second dog). I learned a lot from doing these landscape studies—mainly that I find it difficult to observe and depict the spacial relationships of manmade constructs. For example, don’t look too closely at the Smithfield Street Bridge proportions, because it is all wrong 😂 But that’s what practice is for, right? Happy sketching! ✍️

Hi, my name is Sarica and I constantly underestimate how much time it will take to do things. 😇 At least with the bullet journal system, I can migrate tasks and get to them eventually, or eliminate them if they become irrelevant. Still going strong with the minimal daily logs! Hope you all have a lovely weekend—happy planning!

More landscape studies! This time, I decided to limit my color palette to… the colors I’m wearing on my nails & sweater, apparently 😅 Some of them turned out better than others, but I’m really happy with *all* of them because of how therapeutic they were to paint. I was having a pretty bad start to my week due to some technical issues that hampered my productivity. (Some of you have noticed that my shop is down and I don’t know when it can go back up 😭) Unplugging from tech to work in my sketchbook was a much needed respite. Seriously… if you’re stressed out, I highly recommend painting some happy little trees and/or clouds, and maybe some mountains and waterfalls too. 😌 Have a lovely weekend my art/journaling friends! 🎨 I’ll be spending most of it trying to fix my tech issues, but also taking time to take care of myself, my dogs & my plants 🐺🐕🌱

Tell your story. It is important. 💕 This was posted a whole week ago during my takeover of @sakuraofamerica—can I count it as a #throwbackthursday post? 😅 I don’t think I’ve talked about this before—the importance of telling your story. A lot of what I post is deeply personal, whether it’s either memories that I’m creating in my everyday life, my mental health struggles, or my vulnerabilities as a creative person. And although the actual artwork might not be the most original or unique—I mean really, how many times have you seen this phrase on insta or pinterest? Probs a lot—it’s the backstory and the thought process and the personal connection that makes it unique to me. True aesthetic originality is extremely hard to achieve—we have all been subconsciously influenced/inspired by our environment, our media consumption, the art legacies that came before us. But when we put our own spin on those influences, when we slice and dice and remix the external factors with our internal story, we create something that is unique. It’s in human nature to create things, and it’s also in our nature to share them and connect with others. I guess what I’m trying to say is, don’t stop yourself from making art because you’re afraid of being unoriginal, because your story is an integral part of what you create, whether it’s apparent or not. I am truly grateful that we are able to bond over art & journaling in this community of creative folks; I’m also grateful that you all seem to stick around even though I’m the textbook definition of an oversharer, and most of these captions are just my rambling thoughts 😂

I made a list of my art goals yesterday. There are so many things I want to make, skills I want to improve, and mediums I want to try. Sometimes I wonder if I should just stick to one thing and get really really good at it—like lettering, or making journaling videos—but as some of you lovely people reminded me today, I shouldn’t box myself in just because something won’t look like my past work. Sometimes I get caught up in searching for my so called “art style” because I am afraid of losing myself in a whirl of possibilities. But I think it’s okay to get lost sometimes, as long as you enjoy the journey. 😉 What are your artistic goals?

Here are some colorful watercolor landscape sketches to brighten up your Monday 🌞 I’ve been having so much fun painting mini watercolor pieces for my art journal that I went and got a whole sketchbook to level up my skills. I’m definitely still getting the hang of being patient with letting each layer dry and glazing and achieving atmospheric perspective. I also used paint pens for the foreground, which I’d never tried before—it was super fun!

Today’s lettering video is a super fun message of affirmation. It’s a phrase that I’ve actually written before as a note to myself—not to be braggadocious, but to counter that tricky little demon called imposter syndrome. If you have a negative inner voice telling you that you’re not good enough or that you’re not capable of improving... I’m telling you—yes, YOU!—that you are cute & capable. 🥰 Tag a friend who needs to hear this!

“Don’t compare your first draft to someone else’s final copy.” // Ever look at someone else’s art and start to feel bad about your own? I have. 🙋🏻‍♀️ And this goes beyond art; Sometimes, I subconsciously compare myself to someone else’s career, someone else’s lifestyle, someone else’s ______. And it’s detrimental af. I’ve chatted about how comparison is the thief of joy on my feed before but I needed a reminder going in to March! No matter who you are, there’s always going to be someone that’s a bit farther ahead, and everyone begins the race at a different starting line anyway. If you’ve got comparison-itis, the best thing to do to improve is to use your past self as a benchmark instead of others and keep going 🙌 .
If you want to see my process & hear me chat more about the whole comparison thing, head over to my youtube channel to watch my March plan with me video! ☺️ The link is in my bio 🌺

Note to self: you’re doing just fine 😌 does anyone else need this reminder sometimes? 🙋🏻‍♀️ ‘cause I don’t know about you but I have a case of imposter syndrome that flares up every now and then. That feeling that makes you think you’re a fraud because you’re not 100% sure of what you’re doing. That’s when I have to write a note to self like this one to actively fight back against that negative inner voice. 👊🏼 I’m rooting for myself, and for you too! ❤️ this is a repost from my takeover of @sakuraofamerica’s instagram! I’m using their GELLY ROLL & MICRON pens, which I have loved for years ☺️

I have big dreams for our backyard, and although it’s only February, it’s time to take action! Last year I grew some herbs in a container garden—my small hobby is now a full blown obsession. (The same thing happened with journaling, and look at me now. 😂) We’ve got plans for a square foot garden & chicken coop, and I’m SO EXCITED. It’s still freezing outside, but I’ve got my seedlings in the sunniest indoor spots I can find, and that includes my desk… 🙃 By the way, I’ve just uploaded a massive YouTube video of real time journaling of all my spreads from February, so grab a warm drink and journal with me! ☕️ (link in bio) 💚
