It's hard to tell how huge this telescope πŸ” was without anything to show scale, but it towered over me. I learned a lot about our solar system 🌌 today at Chabot Space & Science Center -- although I originally planned to go just to see the Star Trek Art exhibit. πŸ––πŸ» The plantarium show was informative -- awkward, silly voiceover notwithstanding. What interested me was the depiction of how much "space junk" is out there hovering around the earth - pieces of broken shuttles, defunct satellites, etc., amongst all the many satellites used to make our communications function smoothly. Turns out, scientists haven't figured out how to clear useless things from their orbit around the earth! Maybe @dyson should branch out from hand dryers and home cleaning and create a space vacuum! πŸ›°πŸš€ #space #thefinalfrontier #telescope #explorelocal

Daydreaming of photo shoots in warm and sunny LA on this cold wintery day in the Bay Area. β˜€πŸ“Έ How do you like this maternity portrait? Not always the easiest thing to get everyone looking at the camera, especially with a toddler involved. But these parents are an actor and a dancer so they made my job pretty easy. 😊 #california #losangeles #familyportrait #maternityphotography

After yesterday's photo shoot in Calistoga, I stopped for barbecue pork ribs and got to enjoy this view. It was almost too cold to sit outside, but I was loving the sunshine so much that I did it anyway. It's nice to live and work in California! Beautiful views all over the place. #happyplace #calistoga #napavalley #california

Happy Friday! πŸŽ‰ Had to share this image by my friend and colleague @stephaniedianiphoto - she made me feel like a teenager, giggling at her jokes through the entire photo shoot. She also took the more professional expression in my current profile pic, so I did somehow manage to have a straight face in a few of them. Stephanie works with celebrities in NYC and I'm sure they have so much fun meeting her - she's hilarious! #girlboss #fridaymood #fridayfeeling #headshots

Old Faithful! β˜„οΈπŸ’¦ When I woke up this morning, I was prepping for a family photo session in Calistoga and vaguely thought, "I should look up wineries or something in the area for after the shoot." Figured it's always fun to explore when a job takes me to a new place. But then I thought I'd just ask for recommendations when I got to the hotel and didn't think any more about it. When I got close to the location, I started seeing signs for Old Faithful, the name of the famous geyser I had heard about since I was a little kid. We had fabulous weather today and 4 kids and 4 adults in the photo session, so it was very immersive. But as soon as I was done, I looked up Old Faithful of California, which was only 5 minutes away! (Not the one in Yellowstone, but still cool!) πŸ˜„ It was excellent timing, in fact, because with all of the recent rain, the geyser was erupting every few minutes. So I got to watch it quite a few times. This morning, I would never have imagined I would end up seeing a natural wonder today. Sometimes having space for adventure and leaving the agenda open works out beautifully. Hope you found some magic in your world this week, too. Any stories to share? #geyser #oldfaithful #california #napapalisades

When I was a little girl, I liked to follow my dad around wherever he went. He'd say, "Sare, I need some bolts! Want to go to the hardware store?" And off we'd go, me in my flouncy dress. I loved the little drawers with all the different sized drill bits and nails, and the strange, comforting, slightly metallic smell of the old shop. My dad would get what he needed and a bag of M&Ms for me, and we'd hop back in the car. I felt like I was having very grownup conversations with my dad as we drove around town, just the two of us. Later he told me, "You thought you were 20 when you were 5." πŸ˜‚ So needless to say, I have a special place in my heart for the bond between fathers and daughters, and these two just melted me! Can't you tell how much they love each other? #fatherdaughter #sanfranciscophotographer #familyphotographer #travelingkidsphotographer

Almost exactly 1 year ago, I got diagnosed with something my doctor classified under hippo-pituitary interference -- the trendy name is Adrenal Fatigue. It made even going out and enjoying activities in my down time a struggle -- I didn't feel like doing anything but resting outside of work. This was really odd for me because I have always loved to travel, explore, learn, discover, move around, and suddenly I had no energy for any of that, and a good night's sleep wasn't restoring me. My doc recommended a book called Adrenal Fatigue, which helped me pinpoint my personal emotional sources of stress, and to counter it, the things that make me feel light and joyful. In addition to some major dietary changes, supplements, and 8-10 hours of sleep per night, my task was to eliminate (if possible, or at least reduce) the items on the stress list, and prioritize the things on the joy list. My doctor told me it could take up to 2 years to fully recover, so I took this very seriously, and started making tons of changes. One of the biggest stressors for me was worrying about other people - what they think, if I'm making them happy, etc. I literally had to learn to put myself first - my health depended on it. I'm still learning but I am also so proud of myself for learning to care for myself. It didn't take 2 years for me, it took about 9 months, and I've since been weaning off the supplements. A lot of the good health habits will stick with me forever, and hopefully this new mental state, too. One of the best things is that I now feel like having adventures again, like this random experience in neuroscience at the Pace Gallery. Here, I was learning that luminance is what visually conveys motion -- and other aspects of our vision and how the brain converts that info. It wasn't the most exciting excursion I've ever had, but it was memorable for me because I had the energy to do an impromptu trip down to Menlo Park, as opposed to having to schedule it so I could rest up in advance. It felt like progress to me, and I'm so grateful for my body's ability to heal! #menlopark #adventureisoutthere #creativeminds #snapchatspectacles

When I lived in NYC, I used to photograph album covers for independent artists, mainly jazz musicians. I used a mix of portraits with eye contact and candid shots on location to make a series that would work in an album spread, similar to an editorial series in a magazine. I still use this approach when I'm working with families. It gives my clients confidence when we get a nice shot of everyone smiling, and that makes space to "play" creatively. What I love is witnessing people open up and trust in the creative process, so candids tend to be more exciting for me. That said, a cute shot of everyone looking is nice to have, too! Do have a preference of candid over posed shots, or do you like to see a mix, like me? #familyphotographer #onlocation #berkeley #travelingkidsphotographer

I can't stop thinking of the best vacation I've had to date -- my trip to Australia over Christmas this past year. I watched sea turtles swim through this view from the sundeck. And dusk was beautiful as the summer day became a breezy summer night. There was a tiny gecko that must've found its way through the pipes in the bathroom. He hung out there in the evenings and disappeared somewhere during the day. One morning, a bird came and ate my omelette off the deck. I walked off the beach in snorkeling gear, to where I could dip my face in and see a small fringing reef right outside the resort. At night, I saw too many stars to count, after watching giant bats embark on their nightly flight to feast. For a little while, I forgot entirely what worries even were, and all the stress of running a business was a distant memory. I came back to work this year refreshed, and it seemed to me that something was different. Every year, the calendar turns and people make resolutions. But 2017 felt different to me because *I* felt different. I am still trying to put my finger on what magic transmutation occurred in my trans-Pacific journey... But then again, maybe it's one of those things better left undefined, like a dream, so it can take form in its own way, rather than being forced into the 2-dimensional confines of being put into words. #whitsundayislands #qualia #australia #greatbarrierreef

Have you been to Sutro Baths? It's a fascinating place with the remains of an old bath house against the shoreline, and not to mention iconic oceanfront views. It's one of those dreamy places that are sort of what California was like in my imagination before I had ever been here. #sanfranciscophotographer #familyphotographer #onlocation #sutrobaths

It's rained so much in the last 4 months, I was starting to wonder if I still live in California. πŸŒ‚ Then tonight, I spent part of the evening doing yoga and eating kumquats, and thought, "Yep, still here." πŸ˜‚ When it's not too cloudy, the sunsets are spectacular here, and since moving to the state, my hair is a shade lighter brown with naturally occurring highlights. I haven't spent much time on the beach since my 6-month stint in Santa Monica in 2014, so I'm pretty sure my hair is getting lightened through the moonroof of my car! Anyway, it's interesting to think about how I've been effected by this place. I grew up in the Midwest and lived in NYC for almost 10 years, and California is so different from those places. I've been reading about the history of droughts, and following along with the new data coming out as the current one subsides. One thing that fascinates me is how populous this state is! Almost 1/8 of the U.S. population lives in California. Did you know that? #funfacts #california #sanfranciscophotographer #bayarea #rain

I first photographed πŸ“Έ these kids when they were babies in NYC, and now that we're all in the Bay Area, I get to keep documenting their childhood days. 😊 I love to work with the same clients in different cities. It adds so much to their collection of photos and memories. Where would you love to do a photo session this year? #sanfranciscophotographer #familyphotographer #onlocation #candidchildhood
