Rockstar family portrait. 😎 After some more formal photos at an interior location, this family was keen for an outside shot in the sunshine. Bright sun isn't typically what I use for portraits, but since I already shot some in nice, even light, I thought this was a fun suggestion for a more contemporary shot. I love how the timing came together - the boys getting bored, their sister trying not to sneeze. 🀧 The other shots we got work in a more traditional sense, but this one was my favorite because it's so dynamic and unusual. It's the kind of shot I wish I had of me with my family when I was younger. What do you think? #nyc #manhattan #familyphotographer #streetphotography

Maybe balance is this simple? πŸ’™ The thought of knowing when to hustle and knowing when to chill popped in my head when I was walking around downtown San Francisco this afternoon. It seemed to me it's a gut feeling I get, something I should pay attention to, but don't always. When you run your own business, or have any kind of career or family these days, technology and social media make it so easy/tempting to be on all the time. It's challenging for me to turn off, to remember that when I have photo shoots all weekend, I need to take a couple of days off during the week to recharge. But every time I remember to chill, not only does nothing fall apart, but it seems like things come together more easily than I was expecting -- in spite of, of maybe BECAUSE of, me bowing out for a minute. Have you had this experience? #entrepreneur #girlboss #sanfrancisco #quotd

Analog, baby. πŸ’• I've been photographing this family since their eldest daughter was only just barely walking. This is just a teeny tiny glimpse of a larger series in the West Village. They're a family that always wants to do creative things (in that first session, I captured the baby stepping over a fallen police saw horse, like a tiny rebel!) And this time, I was ecstatic when they wanted to do all black and white film. I shot it entirely on my rangefinder with a fixed wide angle lens. Rangefinders are correlated with vintage street photography style, and that's where so much of my inspiration comes from. I like to think that even when I shoot polished and digital, you can see some of that influence coming through. But here you can see the real vibe. The rough-around-the-edges, caught, fleeting-moment vibe, that *feels* accurate -- in lieu of visual perfectionism. It's has always fascinated me how thwarting perfection in favor of emotional truth of a moment can end up more perfect than anything else. This family is such a great example of what can happen if you just "be" at your photo shoot, and let moments just happen. #nyc #nyckids #familyphotographer #nycphotographer

L shadows. 🚊 Gonna miss the rhythmic rumble of trains going by. My trip to Chicago has been great - worked with old and new clients, and got to spend lots of quality time with dear friends. Thank you so much, @emdrake & @skymarc5! 😘 And, thanks for all of the visual inspiration, #Chicago! #transit #shadows #subway

Check out these baby blues. πŸ’™ I did a few photo shoots at the 16th Ave Tiled Steps in San Francisco last year. They are mosaic tiled steps that have a beautiful progression of depictions of the earth up into the sky and into the stars. One of the children I photographed there pointed this out to me! I love how kids remind us to be whimsical and joyful and stop and experience things. We can learn so much from kids. #sanfrancisco #familyphotographer #streetart #mosaictiles

Sunset over the L. πŸŒ… I really enjoyed watching the trains go by this evening as the sun simultaneously came out from behind the clouds. Felt restorative at the end of a dark and stormy day. 3 more photo shoots tomorrow! I'm eager to capture more of the Chicago vibe. πŸ“·πŸ“ΈπŸ“·#chicago #southloop #sunset #documentaryphotography

An all-time favorite shot. πŸŽ€ I love how the lines of this composition come together just so, and the little girl is frozen in the pink space, as if she's about to splash into a pool of water. I know parents want beautiful portraits where you can see details and facial expressions, but as soon as I know I have those in the can, I can't wait to try to get something like this. I feel like I am a "kid's photographer," in that I'm really in service to kids. I want their leaps to look as epic as they feel when they're leaping. To get into the spirit of wonder, and view the world as a kid sees it, so I can record it for them. As we grow up, childhood seems to fade into the distance, but it was a magical time when we knew our inner world so immediately. I want to make something that these people can look back on when they're no longer kids, and remember what it was like to be that kid. To bridge the inner world between an individual's youth and their maturity. #candidchildhood #streetphotography #spi_collective #oakland

Chicago's street art game is strong. 🎯 I walked from the South Loop to Pizano's today - so happy they make a gluten-free pizza crust! It was truly delish -- didn't feel like I was "settling" for pretend pizza. (Anybody else off gluten? I'd love to hear favorite recipes!) It was pretty cold out today but I loved seeing all of these vibrant wall murals along my walk, and the L dancing through. #streetart #wallmural #chicago #southloop

Improvising is the name of the game with kids. πŸ€ΉπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ I was supposed to be getting shots of these siblings but the little guy just really want to be close to his mama, so it turned into a family portrait. Gotta say, I don't mind when a memorable family portrait comes together. The energy between family members is so unique, I want to record it for them forever. #familyphotographer #familylife #environmentalportrait #candidchildhood

Did you happen to catch my Stories yesterday? πŸ˜‚ If so, you'd have seen me laughing in disbelief at how I had overfilled the washing machine with soap. A big, puffy cloud of soap took over the entire machine - I couldn't even see the clothes inside. I have been doing my own laundry since I was 8 years old and this was the first time I had made the mistake. I've seen it in movies but didn't think it actually happened in real life. And, so I didn't know what to do to fix it! (Turns out I ran it two more times and it cleared.) Anyway, the point of this story is that as an artist, I tend to be very particular about what I share in order to make sure the image quality is impeccable, etc. But Instagram Stories have given me an arena where I feel I can share more of myself. Where I can share "mistakes" and works-in-progress. And just generally how amused I am at life. It's tricky being an optimist like me because people might assume aren't always authentic when you're enthusiastic so much of the time. I once asked a friend if I use too many exclamation points and he replied, "Well, it IS how you speak." πŸ˜„β—οΈI've been trying to share little bits of quirkiness and whimsy, and just how easily amused I am, because my optimism is authentic to me. Life is surely not perfect. But I still find it endlessly amusing. So I'm having fun, and I try to make my feed a place that's fun-oriented. I would love to hear what you think! {I took this photo from the gardens @oaklandmuseumca, overlooking Lake Merritt. What a view, eh?} #oakland #california #lakemerritt #oaklandmuseumofcalifornia

Want to know the secret to success for a family photo shoot? πŸ€” Collaboration! If a kid gets an idea for a photo at the beginning of a photo shoot, that's an amazing thing. I always say, "Yes! Let's shoot that! And after that, let's do this one over here..." (and go on to describe shot the parents want). If the child feels involved, like the session is a collaborative process, they're so much more likely to cooperate on the ideas that were not their own. Adults often have a long list of bad memories from photos gone awry at the DMV, grade school, etc. So it's understandable why they want to try to control things to "ensure" the family portraits turn out well. But it really is best to follow kids' leads on these things - a lot of them don't have as many hang ups about having their picture taken, and they're very good at being in the moment and enjoying themselves. They can actually be a source of inspiration for parents in this regard. A photo shoot is a time for creativity and playing. It's an artistic pursuit, but not just for the photographer. The subjects can participate in that, and camera picks up whether or not a person is participating willingly. So, take a deep breath, give the kids some freedom, and find a zone where everyone is contributing ideas! For most adults this is definitely a stretch outside the old comfort zone. But it's a great way to get natural expressions in your family photos, and at the same time bond with your kids. Have you tried this approach? What are your favorite and least favorite things about being photographed? #familylife #sanfranciscophotographer #nyckids #littlehipster

Chased some light this evening. β˜€οΈ When I was in NYC last weekend I stopped in the #lomography shop and got some weird film stocks called Tesla 2 (applies random lighting bolts to frames) and Rasp (applies scratch marks). It was super sunny and perfect today for playing around with experimental films in my rangefinder so I strolled around Oakland and Alameda with it on my new sling (btw, a sling is great alternative to a traditional camera strap it you have neck problems like me!). I *might* have also stopped for a glass of wine. 🍷 And by "might," I mean, "did." Ahem, field.research. #oakland #alameda #california
