Ryan Polly  I write things, I direct things. Usually at @makertable. I’m also a fan of movies, comics, and 80’s pop culture.

After being out of town last Wednesday I finally made it to @morefuncomicsdenton to pick up my pre-order of Tom King’s THE VISION hardcover. Up there with Fraction/Aja’s HAWKEYE as my fav @marvel comic of the decade.
.
Had the pleasure of meeting @tomking_tk very briefly at @newyorkcomiccon this past year while shooting with @variant_official and can’t say enough nice things about him- such a cool guy.
.
It kind of reads like a movie- a suburban drama about what it means to be human, murder, deception, and the dangers of a homogenous society– it just happens to be about an android and the family he decides to make for himself. It’s a masterclass in creating a voice for a character and setting a consistent tone. As an aspiring screenwriter I found it super inspiring. Not to mention the art is incredible.
.
If you get the chance, I would absolutely recommend picking it up now that it’s in a convenient hardcover, even if you aren’t a huge fan of the character. (You will be after 😊)

Wrapped @ryan_connolly’s new short film BALLiSTIC. Super excited for this guy– one of my favorite people and most talented filmmaker I know. Thankful to be along for the ride and to make movies with friends old and new.

I BET YOU’RE WONDERING HOW I GOT HERE, a heist-comedy, and God-willing... my first feature film. 😳
.
I think that’s the first time I posted that online, which means I have to make it now. It’s gonna happen. First, let’s go back.
.
The idea for this film came as a short years ago, but early this year I made an extensive treatment and submitted it to @musicbed’s Film Initiative. Somehow, by a fluke accident I’m sure, I was selected as one of the finalists. It was one of those moments of validation that made me think, “Wow... this might actually be good. I should make this.” Months later I had a V1 of an incredibly ambitious 17 page script and started pitching it around to friends and colleagues. My producer and great friend @grantpa21 even started putting together a development/pre-pro schedule.
.
But one thing kept on creeping back into my mind: “Is this too big for a short?”. The thought just kept on coming. Some super comforting encouragement by my friends @androorl, @isaacjl, @dmrouth, @awakeland3d, @battmlack, and @courtneypware all at different times made it all too clear: this needs to be a feature.
.
So that’s why I’m posting this. So you guys will know and pressure me into sticking to my goal. My big goal for 2018: write write write. Every day. Even if it’s two hours of blank stares and one line of dialogue. It’s something. And I’m going to finish the feature script for I BET YOU’RE WONDERING HOW I GOT HERE. And then after that in 2019 we’re gonna figure out how to make it. I’m excited. And completely terrified. But I think that’s a good thing. #2017favprojects

p.s. Matt Black is co-writing the screenplay with me so you know it’s gonna be good.
.
p.p.s. Happy New Year! Back to the regular scheduled one-liner captions. ✨

I’LL BE BACK AGAIN, a coming of age story.
.
This isn’t released yet, but technically we shot it in 2017 so I’m adding it to this series. (Preview frames straight out of the camera with a quick VSCO-grade from DP @dmrouth)
.
This was one of my favorite projects of the year for many reasons. One of which was being able to make my 3rd video for @wearethenite, one of my favorite bands and the nicest guys you will ever meet. In January I pitched them an extremely ambitious 80’s period music video with a high school full of extras, dance number, the works. Well, naturally there was no budget for that concept. 9 months later I couldn’t get the story out of my head so I changed it up, simplified the concept, and re-pitched it. The dudes loved it and earlier this month we shot it.
.
It was also the first project of mine that I felt the production design and look wasn’t half-assed. Great props and wardrobe (thank you to @whitneysirois, eBay, @shopcamp, and the Mini Mall RIP). We shot on a cinema zoom through panty-hose. Super soft and bloomy. 4:3 in camera. No going back. Daniel and I loved the look though and it was exactly what I dreamed ✨
But a quick lesson I learned: on period pieces be prepared to spend a GOOD chunk of your budget on props, wardrobe, and prod design.
.
The story of this video is completely weird and ridiculous and I think everyone is going to fall in love with @haven_isom’s super fun performance. I hope everyone enjoys it when it releases in early 2018 ☺️

“Earned History”, a World Series spot for @budweiser and @astrosbaseball. (Agency: @infiniteagency, directed by myself and @timothyryanmccarthy )
.
So this was a big project for us for many reasons. The Infinite Agency, one of @makertable’s favorite partners, approached us in August to make a @budweiser playoffs spot for the Astros who were about to clinch. Well, the week we had the shoot planned Hurricane Harvey hit. The spot was pushed back and the concept changed quite a bit. With the resilience and heart of the people of Houston, the spot became so much more. We brought a great crew down to Houston and had an amazing shoot. (second video on this post)
.
Cut to a month later and the Astros are in the World Series. Within the span of a few days, Infinite and @makertable pre-produce a second spot, drive to Houston, shoot it, and I edit a rough cut on the way back to Denton. By far one of our most exciting moments as a company. To cap it off we went to LA to game 6 and 7 of the series to grab celebration footage and make the final edit.
.
Don’t have much to say on the experience other than the fact that it was a total blast from start to finish. If I can give one piece of advice as a filmmaker this year it’s make lasting relationships with other people in the industry. The crew that we were able to work with this year have become close friends and have been the core of how we created the projects we did this year. I would tag them all but I’m running out of room on this post... you know who you are :) Scroll through for both the spots and some goofy bts insta stories. Here’s to the next World Series spot 😉 #2017favprojects
