Rudy Frank  One with the Positive Vibes

I still see my Dad as the big man of the house. The fact that he can still remember how to play chess amazes me even though every now and then he forgets which piece is which. Ironically, I can tell if I slip up while playing because he always has the counter attacks lined up.

My Father loved teaching me how to play chess when I was younger. We spent the weekends doing many different family activities but chess was his favorite. Probably because he was always beating me and he didn't have a problem doing so.
He wanted me to become frustrated and think critically about solving the problem. Whenever I'd ask him what he would do in my position he would comment the same thing: "What do you think is the real thing to do? And what do you think is the right thing to do?" Oh course that never made sense to me as a boy, he would just nod and I would lose regardless of my choices. But growing older it's starting to make sense to me in more areas of my life than just in a game of chess.
Something along the lines of the listening to the mind versus listening to the heart. Considering what you are most passionate about. I wish I'd taken more time back then to ask him what that means. It's times like these when I really wish I knew "What is real about our family and his Dementia?" and "What is right about our family and his Dementia?" #endalz #dateswithdementia #alzheimersawareness

About a year and half ago I started taking photos of my father as we played chess together. For those who do not following me much, my father is battling Dementia. These moments resonate with me more than anything else because I know he struggles to remember them. 2 years later, what had turned into me just taking photos of a chess game has now grown into me documenting every aspect of his life and his family's life as it becomes affected by Dementia.
After spending the weekend with my family celebrating our Father's 75th birthday I wish to announce I've started a fundraising and awareness campaign called Dates with Dementia (@dateswithdementia). My vision is to create a safe platform for visually creative minds to share and relate to their experiences with those they love battling Dementia. Eventually this will be a gallery for scholars / artists /documentarians all over the world helping to end Alzheimer's Disease and other brain diseases through visually creative means. "To me the family's struggle [with dementia] starts with having the right kind of mind set. You have to believe in yourself that you can stay positive. The challenge is treating each experience as if it was our first date with someone. Even though we are on our 10th date with the same person we are still there to learn how to love them over and over again like we did the first time. This is my approach when making photographs." Please help me by following @dateswithdementia and joining me as I start to share some of the most personal photographs I've ever tried making in my life. I hope you all enjoy and learn from this frustratingly scary yet joyous and beautiful chapter in my life that has allowed me to reflect on the person and family we are today.

So I did a thing in Indiana this weekend. Like a ninja I woke up at 4AM, drove 3.5 hours to a corn field, and walked away with a soar body and 5 medals. 1st in Forms (first time ever for me), 3rd in weapons (first time I've dropped my weapon in 2 years), 1st in sparring, 1st in combat sparring, and 2nd in XMA forms (while making it up on the spot). Ya boy is now leading in 3 categories for becoming the 2018 state champion of Kentucky in #ATA Taekwondo. There is still plenty of season to go however so the race is not over yet. One way or another I'm very happy to have competed with good friends and amazing martial artists despite being sick and on antibiotics all week. #nevergiveup

Thinking about the days when I used to make photographs for the sake of photography; not for an assignment. I miss those days. It reminds me of college, my mentors, and my peers at ASU. Lately I've been so frustrated with trying to pay off student loans I miss out on the real reasons I became a visually creative person. I've been trying to find gig after gig while also working full time as a Martial Arts instructor/assistant director. Today I just want to wake up and say "enough is enough." Not only am I going to start grinding more with photography, but I'm going to stop limiting myself and start doing things FOR myself. Why? Because we all deserve to love ourselves no matter how difficult or broken things may seem. There is beauty within all of us no matter where we are in life. #portals

Tucker is like my little Pikachu when I'm out making pictures. My eyes and ears watching out behind me when my face is looking through the view finder. Sometimes I feel like I can hear him singing the Pokemon theme song... or maybe that's just me being an 80s baby lol ~ "I wanna be the very best...." 🎵😎🐺

Some vibes are meant to be chill... ❄️

A little tired and rusty tonight after doing it 1 million times for my students, but it feels good to finally have the space in our new studio to start practicing XMA. Let the flips begin! #earnyourblackbelt #summitmartialarts #atastrong #hyperma @earnyourblackbelt

And the Model of the Year Award goes to... Tucker 🐺
