Thanking MLK today for his message of action and hope. Let’s recognize all the ways we as a white, silencing society, masked his message to paint him not as a radical academic targeted by the police and the FBI, but instead as a black person that spoke of peace in a way that was digestible for white people who wanted to continue living within their supremacy. There’s so much work to do, and white people, we must actively do it. Our liberal whiteness does not exempt the fact that our culture and our daily life keeps us benefitting from white supremacy, every day, no matter how liberal or inclusive our practice. MLK Jr was murdered by white supremacy, and on this day, I hope we choose to acknowledge that fact, and all the ways that we can use the immense privilege we hold to change the ways we talk and celebrate him.
