Please excuse me for posting the following messages repeatedly. I hope anyone who goes there will not take the bunnies just as a tourist attraction.
As a bunny lover, it is a mixture of extreme feelings to visit the rabbit island. Happiness from the cuteness of the bunnies and the beauty of the island, sadness from the homeless, many with sickness and injury, each deserved to be loved and cared for.
They are not your free entertainment. They are living creatures, fighting to survive on this island, on their own (they do not belong to the hotel). It really is not a paradise for the bunnies. So, if you really want to go, please do something for them. Don't take the bunnies for granted. - do not pick them up. Bunnies are prey animals, they do not like to be picked up. A kick from the struggle can both hurt you and break their own bones easily. And if they get injured, they are less likely to survive.
- bring a few empty bottles with you and fill their water bowls along the way while you spend your time on the island. This is especially important on sunny days.
- bring only food that are good for bunnies. The best is to get some bunny pellets or hay from a rabbit pet shop. Not all vegetables are good for bunnies, if you're not sure, ask a bunny person. Carrots and cabbages are like chips for human kids, they can have some, but they do not feed on these. Fruits are not good for young bunnies, most bunnies here are very young, so fruits are not good choice to bring.
- please do not bring scrap veggies for the bunnies. Bunnies have sensitive tummy, so they cannot feed on bad veggies. The scrap veggies rot easily, and even if the bunnies are smart enough to not eat the scarps, the scarps attract and feed the rats and the wild boars (yes, there are wild boars and lots of rats on the island) and these creatures threaten the wellness of the bunnies somehow. Sometimes, there are too many visitors, so the bunnies cannot finish all the food, unfinished fresh produces cause problems for the same reason (they rot and attract rats, boars and crows), please bring back unfinished veggies.

おにぎりちゃん was my hubby's favourite bunny on the #rabbitisland #okunoshima. We saw his/her pics even before we went there, and surprisingly we did not need to look for him, we saw him immediately when we started roaming on the island. We miss him dearly!
