When it comes to kneeling during the National Anthem by #NFL players (or anyone for that matter) to bring attention to a very serious issue of abuse and brutality towards African Americans -- I do not see how it disrespects our flag or our country.
It is no secret that we still have work to do in order to eliminate prejudice, hatred, and gross acts of violence in this country. However, this work cannot be done unless we start truly listening to one another. At the very least, we must try to understand what it might be like to walk in someone else's shoes.
I was born white (not by my choosing), therefore by very nature of my birth I have been privileged -- I am not ignorant to that reality. At the same time though, I am also a member of the LGBTQ minority. Identifying with this part of who I am has helped instill in me a sense of compassion and empathy for all those that have been unfairly marginalized and oppressed.
As a patriot to my core, I believe that exercising one's freedom of speech to draw attention to a problem that needs all of our attention, is an ultimate act of patriotism.
