ROLEX  Featured watch:

Launched in 1967, the Sea-Dweller was the first Rolex divers' watch with a date display. A useful feature for a watch designed for professional saturation divers, who typically "dwell" for days, weeks or even months in pressurized habitats during their missions. Yet the signature Cyclops magnifying lens on Rolex calendar watches could not be integrated on the original models as it would weaken the Plexiglas crystal under high pressure and compromize the watch's waterproofness. On the anniversary edition of the Sea-Dweller released in 2017, Rolex engineers managed to solve this technical issue and add a Cyclops lens for the first time to this iconic model.

In 1960 American Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard descended aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste to the Mariana Trench, beneath the Pacific Ocean, the deepest point in the world’s oceans. An experimental Rolex Oyster watch, the Deep Sea Special, was fixed to its exterior of the Trieste and its crew not only set a record with their dive but established a fundamental milestone for deep-sea exploration. In a sense, Walsh’s DNA can be found in every subsequent Rolex watch made since. To celebrate the half-century of this pioneering dive, he was presented a Rolex Submariner, engraved on the back, “Don Walsh. Deepest Dive, 1960-2010. In Appreciation.”

Sisters of the deep: the two Rolex experimental watches that went down to the deepest part of the ocean, 52 years apart; the "Old Lady", right, was attached to the bathyscaphe Trieste in 1960 as it dove for the first time to 10,916 metres (35,814 feet) into the Mariana Trench in the Pacific; and the Rolex Deepsea Challenge, left, which followed suit in 2012, attached to James Cameron's DEEPSEA CHALLENGER Submersible. Both watches returned to perfect working order after resisting the abyssal pressure of one tonne per square centimetre.

The 60-minute graduation on the bezel of the Rolex Deepsea and Sea-Dweller professional divers' watches has minute marks throughout the scale, whereas on the Submariner, only the first 15 minutes are detailed up to the minute. This is because the detailed scaled is used by divers to precisely time their decompression stops, and the deeper and longer the dive - such as those by technical divers - the more time is required for decompression.

The early 1960s saw the emergence of scientific projects to create underwater dwellings. The name Sea-Dweller, given to the ultra-resistant divers’ watch developed by Rolex in 1967, alluded to these projects. One of the most ambitious underwater habitat programmes, named Tektite, was set up in the United States in 1969. Four American “aquanauts”, equipped with Rolex watches, spent a record 58 days living and working under the sea. In 1970, the programme continued with Tektite II, an all-female mission that included marine biologist and explorer Sylvia Earle, today a long-standing Rolex Testimonee.

The new Sea-Dweller perpetuates the heritage of the professional divers’ watch designed by Rolex exactly 50 years ago, in 1967. Waterproof to a depth of 1,220 metres (4,000 feet), the new Sea-Dweller features a larger, 43mm case and the new calibre 3235, at the forefront of watchmaking technology. The dial bears the name Sea-Dweller in red, a reference to the first model.
