Rob Jorgensen  Sound designer, producer, audio guy. Connoisseur of vintage microphones, all types.

The classic Mohawked visage of the Turner 22x. Big and heavy with chrome fins, it just drips with mid-century design ethos. From an era when design meant something. #vintagemicrophone #microphonecollection #midcentury #midcenturymodern #chrome #50s #recordingstudio #voiceover

I like the details on this one. Midland 22-208. #vintagemicrophone #microphonecollection #midcentury #60s #microphone #recordingstudio

Hello! What’s this treasure? I’ll admit I snooped around a bit at the studio I’m visiting. These guys were hiding in a back room. Schoeps CMC 6 - U stereo pair. #microphone #studiomicrophone #recordingstudio #stereo #studio

Some fun working companions for the day. Visiting a studio in Sanford, FL. #recordingstudio #recording #studio #tubes #compressor

@shure 705 A “Rocket.” According to the 1939 catalog, this mic is “ultra-modern In form and performance.” It adds “distinctive beauty and versatility to high quality sound installations.” #vintagemicrophone #microphonecollection #midcentury #modern #artdeco #30s #40s #microphone #studio #recording

@bluemicrophones enCORE 300 cardioid condenser stage microphone. I absolutely love the back lit logo on this mic. Everything about it is classy. And it feels great in the hand. #Blue just does everything right. #microphonecollection #studio #recordingstudio #microphone #bluemicrophones #studiolife #voiceover

@microtech.gefell M900. Condenser cardioid vocal mic. Designed to be hand held for stage use, but great for studio as well. I have a pair and they have been stunning on choir and crowd walla. #microtechgefell #microphonecollection #studio #recordingstudio #microphone #studiolife

@shure Sonodyne 51. One of the all-time great designs from Shure. The ad is from 1947, and the mic itself is an early red silk Chicago model. Could be a ‘47. I found this mic in a closet in the sound booth of the church my dad grew up attending. He says he remembers singing into it as a teenager. How emphatically can one say NFS? #vintagemicrophone #microphonecollection #shure #microphone #vintage #midcentury #studio #recording

Altec 683 Cardioid. This thing is built like a tank. It’s heavy! My friends over at @preservationsound did a great review of this mic. Bottom line: not the best-sounding dynamic on the planet. But it looks great on the original stand! The jet turbine grill is a great feature. #vintagemicrophone #microphonecollection #microphone #60s #midcentury #recording #studio

@shure 330 Uni-Ron. One of my first ribbon mics. This was released in the mid-50s, and early tags say “Chicago.” If yours says Evanston, it’s 1957 or later. Interesting side note: The earliest data sheets on these indicate the name as “Unitron.” Every actual 330 I’ve seen says “Uni-Ron” on the label. Shure officially claims no knowledge of the name change, but some people think it had to do with a telescope company that had been selling a model called the Unitron since the early 50s. Avoiding a lawsuit? Who knows. #vintagmicrophone #microphonecollection #ribbonmic #shure #recordingstudio #vintage #midcentury #chrome
