“Ivy Lab” by Ivy Lab

Curated by: @jpawsf

Genre: #futurebeat
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I don't have a ton of memories from the time spent with my grandmother, Mama Sylvia; only a handful really. Sharing a room with her on a cruise (and witnessing her dentures sitting in a glass next to the bathroom sink). Dining at her favorite cafeterias, Morrison's and Piccadilly (whatever happened to those old-school spots?). And my most vivid...driving in her long, white Caddy with burgundy leather and silver trim. Not really sure why, but I have bleak recollections of that car. Maybe because I was constantly terrified when she was behind the wheel? Or perhaps it's that whenever I think it, I see her as old and frail? Whatever the reason, I've never been a big fan of Cadillacs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ivy Lab is helping shift that impression. With each listen of their eccentric, bass-driven crawler "Cadillac", those evocation's slowly melt away and the word/brand/title begins to take on a new connotation. With an oh-so-fucking-raw vibe and slithery composition, "Cadillac" is an outlier compared to its brothers and sisters off the album Death Don't Always Taste This Good. The London duo is best known for their drum & bass excellence, yet their versatility shines on this guy and the other RWT shoe-in, "Cake". Even "Cake" in all its sugary crispiness still makes me wish for more tracks like this one.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Clocking in at an absurdly low < 70,000 Spotify plays, this is one of the better songs under 100k that I've heard in a minute. This definitely isn't a sound that Mama Sylvia would have ever enjoyed, but how much I enjoy it would make her one happy grandma.

“My Dearest Friend” by Manatee Commune
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by: @t.pav1
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Genre: #futurebass
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery -- no one knows this more than Animal Collective superfan Grant Eadie, who is the artist similarly dubbed, Manatee Commune. Well, actually, come to think about it, stunt doubles know this. And for that matter, actors obviously do. As do celebrity impersonators...shit. What am I saying?! This is a commonly used phrase. Everyone knows this! Anywho, imitation aside, Grant, a Seattle native, got his big break from a NPR interview, after the nature reveal in his Tiny Desk submission placed his video in their Top 10 favorites. It’s fitting for an artist whose music was likened to “plants growing” by the Seattle Weekly, but unlike plants growing, it only takes a couple of minutes for Grant’s beats to bloom. It’s in these expansive soundscapes where I find healing, breathing in the oxygen from his meditative melodies.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a classically-trained multi-instrumentalist, Eadie uses Manatee Commune to compose -- playing a combination of guitar, keyboard, drums, and viola, then, layering audio snippets to add texture. The output is epic, sonically capturing the majesty of nature like a buoyant, perfectly-caffeinated Tycho.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“My Dearest Friend” is packed with a lot of sentimental value from Grant, a “culmination of childhood memories” that capture the nostalgia of summer vacation. When I press play on this one, I close my eyes and teleport to Timbergreen -- it’s the subdivision I grew up in, where days with the crew consisted of riding around the cul-de-sac on Ripsticks toward whoever’s house had the latest haul of Freeze Pops. The track is an instant mood-changer, where potential sadness raining on your parade suddenly evaporates.

“Habitual Ritual” by Luces
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by: @no_floecks_zone
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Genre: #deephouse
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After you’ve made it onto the ski lift, you look up to the peak of the mountain standing before you. You begin to twitch as you ascend, envisioning what is soon to be your first time skiing. It’s very cold outside. As you approach, you can begin to make out the drop, where you’ll supposedly land safely and ski down a damn mountain. It is suddenly nearer. You’re very close now. You’ve got to make the jump, so you just get prepared to do it and...you ski, which, I assume, is a very enjoyable activity well worth the wait and effort. I’ve never skied, but I’ve listened to “Habitual Ritual” and the experience begat this vision I’ve laid out before you here. So, same thing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have never experienced music-induced or any other form of synesthesia. I have reason to believe this song would be bonkers to behold with the phenomenon. The synth that drips into the track embodies a light growing brighter and brighter until it bursts, causing fragments to shatter like glass, showering all across the black background of the inside of your eyelids when you close your eyes and focus.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s also just a really big piece of bubblegum. Not in any manner that considers it disposable or trite, but in that it’s got an addictive chewiness, and a really definite smack, that keep it going quite steadily, pop after pop. It’s got the stuff of a hit pop song stretched into a weirdly beachy, breezy, funky disco tune that wouldn’t feel out of place on an actual beach or in a club far from one. So if you visit one of these two places soon, or if you don’t, bring along “Habitual Ritual” for a multifaceted joyride.

Beatmaker’s Dozen Vol. 2 - Super Duper (playlist link in profile)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are very excited and honored to announce the Beatmaker for Volume 2 of our Beatmaker's Dozen, Super Duper. With nearly 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and having just wrapped a tour with Petit Biscuit and Kasbo, Nashville's Josh Dawkins is one of the emerging names to watch in the EDM scene. We've been on the Super Duper train ever since first hearing (and then featuring) "Angela" and his sounds keeps slowly evolving for the better. You'll also find across Rock With This platforms his souful collab with Louis Johnson, "Second Chances". We've said it before and we'll say it again, if Big Wild and Jai Wolf are in your galaxy, then you'll want to dig deep into this rising star.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s what Josh had to say about his selections:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“These are all songs I listen to when I'm driving, answering emails or hanging with friends. Background music in the best way but they all have some element or quality that pushes the envelope if you listen close enough. Songs that can balance a unique quality with universal appeal are always intriguing to me. Taking something weird or new and making it palatable is a tough challenge and I think a lot of these songs do that well." - Super Duper

2. "I Could Always (feat. MNDR)" by LE YOUTH

“Prove My Love 2 U” by Inner State 81
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by: @t.pav1
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Genre: #electrosoul
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We’re spending this Valentine’s Day on Inner State 81, and it’ll take you less than 30 seconds to understand why. Traveling down Inner State 81, you’ll inhabit 3 different decades all at once through a bit of sampling inception. Like Alicia Keys on her 2003 hit record, “You Don’t Know My Name,” 2018’s “Prove My Love 2 U” samples a hidden gem by The Main Ingredient from 1975, “Let Me Prove My Love to You.” Fun facts: Cuba Gooding Jr’s. dad (CG Sr.) is the lead singer and out of The Main Ingredient’s 9 Billboard-charting tracks, this wasn’t one of them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As for the man behind this highway of beats, Tucker Nicholas began releasing music his sophomore year of college instead of doing his homework. While his first EP What I Did Instead of Homework was filled with lusciously-chopped soul samples, Tucker has tinkered with his sound to evolve into a much more experimental electronic artist, as you’ll notice on his brand new album, Can’t Please Everyone. We throwback to “Prove My Love 2 U” obviously because it’s a Thursday, and the basic folk gotta get their #TBTs in, but more importantly, because it’s the best < 20,000 streamed Valentines-themed Spotify song you’re going to find today. I guarantee it (thank you @mikemezzino ).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On “Prove My Love 2 U” - I want to give a special shout-out to all the single women and men out there in the world. Our minds want us to turn Valentine’s Day into a pity party, but I say, who are we to stand in the way of letting ourselves get out there and find some love of our own. There are many ways you can choose to let this day go, but I hope you remember the heart of its purpose: to spread love, to yourself and those around you.

“The Man Who Has Everything” by Chance the Rapper
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by: @andrewgdogg
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Genre: #hiphop
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This write up is going to be painful for me because I’m really not a Chance The Rapper fan. I actually am of the belief that he has connections in high places, because Acid Rap and Coloring Book were #1 on the end of the year lists for quite a few blogs that I remember. I will give him props though, his energetic live shows are very entertaining. Chancelor Jonathan Bennett's meteoric rise was interesting to observe and it demonstrated the true star making potential of the internet.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Chance the Rapper's influence is particularly impressive because he’s done it as an independent artist. In other words, he’s getting all the checks. While he hasn’t released an official solo album yet, his previously mentioned mixtapes Acid Rap and Coloring Book have given him enough buzz to last a lifetime. I personally enjoyed the Based Freestyles Mixtape collaboration with Lil B, so I continue to listen to his songs and I was happily wowed when I heard this track.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“The Man Who Has Everything” is produced by Chance’s go-to producer Nascent and Jeremih. The same Jeremih who croons and made me melt with his banger “oui” and this year’s track “Goin Thru Some Thangz”. The production here is simple and effective, lulling you into the perfect mindstate to absorb Chance’s lyrics. I would argue that this is the most hip-hop sounding I’ve ever heard Chance. He’s been releasing a few loosies this year and Barack Obama chose the one he did with Joey Purp on his annual end of the year list for 2018. This is the track that Obama should’ve picked though! I never thought I’d correct Obama, but here I am. Now I’ll let the track do the talking.

“Arcus” by RL Grime & Graves
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by: @jpawsf
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Genre: #trap, #futurebass
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have a collection of memories from my adolescence, where whenever I would turn on my music passion of the month in my parent's cars, or around the house, I would immediately be greeted with some version of "Jared, will you please turn that down!?". This wasn't necessarily a volume situation, it was more an electric guitar thing. Something about the electric guitar of Mikey Houser from Widespread Motherfuckin' Panic, or Stevie Ray Vaughn (the GOAT), or any number of the guitarists from the hair bands I oh so loved, it just grated on their nerves. At the time I just didn't get it. This was the music of legends and I wasn't able to comprehend how they couldn't appreciate it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fast-forward 25 years and with each new wrinkle of my skin and grey hair on my head, I am finally starting to get it. There's just some music out there, and yes in the EDM world as well, that sounds harsher and harsher with each passing day. For my 'rents it was "that dang guitar" but for me it's more a matter of tone, or to put it bluntly, a matter of loud, shitty music.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've said all of that to say this...thank the music heavens for the man we call RL Grime! Henry Alfred Steinway keeps coming up with wildly beautiful, hard hitting future bass-trap anthems that these aging ears still warmly devour. “Arcus” isn’t overly tricky, but it's as anthemic as they come. Like RL (and here with Graves) does so swimmingly, he builds and builds and builds this bitch with swelling melodies and haunting vocals until the track shatters synths all over your dome piece. And those drums. THOSE DRUMS. This is the stuff made of legends, and I can't wait to play this for my folks next time I see them.

“It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)” by Peggy Gou
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by: @hobshogan
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Genre: #nudisco
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We live in 2019 and we need to be able to accept contradictions. “It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)” is a very memorable track. Deal with it. You won’t forget the song, however, if you really release yourself to the 90’s influenced house trance and the exotic input of bongos while listening, you may find yourself losing track of your immediate surroundings. In fact, you may find yourself not knowing what day of the week it is. You may find yourself taping cardboard over your windows, in order to give your apartment more of an “underground Berlin rave aesthetic”.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Rock With This assumes no liability for side effects that may occur if you chose to play this song on repeat. Be careful. On paper, Peggy Gou’s dreamy vocals in her native Korean tongue and a lively layering of percussion and synth shouldn’t be a threat, but in clinical trials, spontaneous dancing occurs for 95%. Even the most uptight members of society get hit with the fever right before the three-minute mark of this 2018 release. I accidentally left this song on repeat at home while grabbing coffee one morning (insanely irresponsible). When I returned home, my dog, who was exposed to merely four replays of Peggy Gou’s best release yet, is now a fluent Korean speaker.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Peggy Gou was originally born in Korea and now resides in Berlin, lending a refreshing multi-cultural element to her music. Though she’s dabbled with DJing since 2009, Gou began publishing her own music in 2016. She released four EP’s that initial year. The steady flow of tunes have shown no signs of stopping any time soon, or, as indicated by “It Makes You Forget (Itgehane),” diminishing in quality.

“Azawade” by The Touré-Raichel Collective
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by: @jpawsf
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Genre: #world
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This week, I had two profound music listening experiences...one of them blissful, the other I couldn't wait to escape. After some persuading from the lady, I signed up ClassPass (a workout subscription service) and after a harsh work day, Rock With This' co-founder Dane W. Iliff suggested we hit up some hot yoga for our inaugural workout sesh. Having not done yoga for what seemed like a decade, I wearily agreed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The studio was tiny and oh so hot. I had heard about "hot yoga", but didn't realize that literally meant having the heat full bore from start to finish. As we settled in, I awkardly began the stretches and poses. After a few minutes of trepidation, the instructor began the session soundtrack and "Azawade" began to flow from the speakers. My stiff body instantly loosened. My thoughts, which were stricken with insecurity, became lighter. With each tap in the rhythm, chant of the lyrics, and flick of the guitar string, I sunk deeper and deeper within, thoroughly enjoying nearly every moment of the piping hot seventy minutes of contortion.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then a few days later I went to a work out class with my wife and the music was absolutely fucking terrible. A mix of angry rap and aggressive electronic music, the instructor must have thought this would fire up her tribe. It didn't. In fact, it made me wish I was just about anywhere else and completely ruined the experience for me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My hunch is that I'm more sonically sensitive than the average whiney jew, but my hunch is also that people like good music. So, it's simple...play good music. Play The Touré-Raichel Collective's "Azawade". Perhaps even today. And thank me later.

“Burns” by George FitzGerald
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by: @t.pav1
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Genre: #housemusic
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Time stops for no one, and while Aaliyah showed us that age ain’t nothing but a number, it was her premature passing that taught us to never take our precious time for granted. Aging is a polarizing process -- some embrace it, becoming the person they’ve always wanted to be, while others struggle through a futile fight, yearning to fill their cup with the fountain of youth. At 25, I’ve been living the last year caught in the middle, and it’s been George FitzGerald’s music guiding me closer to acceptance.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A DJ who grew up an employee of the infamous, and now, sadly closed, Black Market Records store in London, George Fitzgerald lived his late-20’s out of the hallowed halls of Berlin’s club cathedrals, regularly performing at venues such as Berghain. But after 10 years away from home and the birth of a young FitzGerald, George decided to leave the club life and evolve into parenthood. He went back home. Now 34, his perspective has shifted, from partying as a DJ to crafting a legacy of live performances.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On “Burns,” Fitzgerald begins with some vocal tones from a preset you might be able to find on an old Yamaha, then quickly elevates the track with an atmospheric bassline. When I listen along, I feel the trepidation of change as well as the invigoration of starting anew. It’s this duality, that allows George to cut right to the visceral core and what led BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac to dub this the “Hottest Record in the World.” By the time the hi-hat kicks in, you’ll be dancing across the tightrope toward your next destination. Time stops for no one, but the transition from one day to the next is much easier with “Burns” on the queue.

“Concussion” by Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by: @no_floecks_zone
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Genre: #jazzfusion
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Delvon Lamarr Dumas is a drummer from Seattle who naturally picked up the organ by watching someone else and never looked back. That the someone else was a renowned keyboardist by the name of Joe Doria might have something to do with the killer boost Dumas provides on the organ in “Concussion,” an absolutely murderous groove. It’s off a two-sided single dropped by the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio following the charting of their record Close But No Cigar at number one on the U.S. Contemporary Jazz Albums charts, per Billboard.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As I strolled through the YouTube comments on “Concussion,” all mostly mundane, I found one account that observed the unusually raw sound of the kick drum on the recording. It’s fluffed, a little muffled and oh so present. It makes this recording sound live, right in front of you as you listen along and shake your ass. The rambling guitar solo at 2:51 will take you all the way downtown with some seriously nimble picking - that’s Jimmy James, another Seattle music scene veteran, who entered the band replacing guitarist Collin Higgins; James knew drummer David McGraw from a soul band they’d previously played in together.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When the night seems close to ending but you’re ready to push through with one more gust of wind, this is the soundtrack you need to vibe you out and keep you going. The group describes their sound as “soul, with a strong influence of jazz,” and that it’s built around the organ beat. It’s a perfect union that begs to be heard actually live, sans headphones. Given the chance to track the Devon Lamarr Trio down, I suggest you jump on it.

“Holy Drops” by Fhin
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by: @amandascharkss
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Genre: #futurebass
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These days, it’s all too often we forget that music is a true form of art that deserves to be observed as one might a painting on a wall. On the other hand, it’s not often enough that we hear a song so powerful to remind us. Brice Rivallin's a.k.a. Fhin music tends to fall in line with the latter.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In general, the Parisian producer is responsible for creating some pretty unique tracks due to his jack-of-all-tradeness in both the instrumentalist and vocalist departments. Although all of his music exudes a vibe that forces one to stop and listen, “Holy Drops” might have to be my favorite in terms of thought provocation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To start, the beginning of the song is technically a verse, chorus, and bridge all at once, only to...wait for it...drop into the drop. I mean, he even drops the word “drop.” Genius. Fhin induces a sort of bungee effect as the notes fall down and bounce back up until the song continues its course along the flip side. In a clever juxtaposition, he then daintily dusts our ears with some lofty guitar loops. Meanwhile, he has the words “everything’s so heavy” on repeat, as if to further exemplify the desire to drop something. Not to worry, though--I’ll save the rest for your ears.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While the full meaning behind the somewhat solemn lyrics is not necessarily clear, I can say without a single doubt that listening to this song sounds like I’m looking at a picture. I find myself not only savoring the melody, but also noticing and appreciating all of its components. Fhin is an incredibly talented musician who both dares to be different and creates substance that is undeniably enjoyable.
