In rural areas, people gathered in hubs close to water sources or areas of particular interest, such as elevated plateaus or fertile stretches of land.
Every family actively contributed to the village’s necessities; bakers, butchers, shoemakers, clothing artisans, horsemen, masons all worked alongside in the interest of the community.
The Cervo Valley, in northwest Italy, is scattered with small and tiny clusters of houses (“borgo”=village) and is a reminder of how, in an ever evolving society, we can and perhaps should start collaborating in the reconstruction of basic and integrated lifestyles that cut out excesses and superfluous needs allowed by the expansion of globalized commercial businesses and, even more, due to the partial disintegration of our cultural heritage. Past is future.
