I met Gulnara in 2006 for the first time in Khinaliq village, the highest populated point in Azerbaijan. I was struck by her beauty. This year I visited the village again and stayed at Gulnara's home. It's been twelve years since I last photographed her and in spite of harsh conditions, severe climate and a life of basic necessities, she continues to shine. Here are the photographs of Gulnara twelve year apart - a gorgeous woman, a generous and kind host. #beauty #woman #mountains #azerbaijan #khinaliq #village @natgeocreative @thephotosociety

The Soviet legacy of oil in Baku: 1. A family enjoys a day on the Shikhov beach in Baku, dismantled Soviet era oil rigs loom in the background. 2. Medicinal petroleum baths are believed to cure arthritis and other ailments in Naftalan oil spa. Workers harvest salt in Dharasana, Gujarat. Activists trained in nonviolent resistance marched here and were beaten during the Salt March led by Gandhi, a seminal event that advanced India’s drive for independence. #india #gujarat #saltmarch #gandhi #resistance #campaign #independence @natgeocreative @natgeo @thephotosociety

Five years ago this month, I traveled across Gujarat state in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi's iconic Salt March from Ahmedabad to Dandi, photographing the modern-day landscape and people in my attempts to trace history. In this Gujarati village of Ras on the eve of the Salt March, Gandhi’s stout supporter and India's first home minister Sarder Patel was arrested by the British forces to prevent him from addressing a gathering. In the following weeks hundreds of the Salt March activists were detained by the British as they embarked on their non-violent resistance campaign against the imposed salt tax. #nonviolent #resistance #campaign #gandhi #saltmarch #india #gujarat #history @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @natgeo

Clad in traditional dress, cousins Anuța and Magdalena are on their way to a wedding in Sat Șugatăg, Maramureș, Romania. Many young people have moved out of rural areas of Transylvania to find work in Western Europe, but in spite of these changes, some young people stayed and continue to observe and respect the culture and tradition of the region. #girls #culture #dress #shoes #beauty #women #tradition #wedding #romania #rural @natgeo @natgeocreative @thephotosociety
