What a day. I started in the second group but managed to get to the front within a few kilometers, just before the Col de la Joux Verte. On the Joux Verte I was riding at the front, but man the pace was high. The peloton cracked everywhere. I also got dropped from the first group but managed to stay with three others for the remainder of the climb. We soon descended back to Morzine, heading Northbound to the Col de la Corbier. The others were still riding like crazy zo I quickly decided I'd go ride on my own pace as I knew the biggest climb was still a hundred kilometers down the road.
After that I rode on my own for nearly eighty kilometers, sometimes wondering if I was still part of this ride. I also had some time to take in my surroundings. Quiet little villages with a church tower right in the middle of it. A road snaking through the valleys. Cows turning their heads as you pass them, their cow bells clinging distinctively.
It was also really hot today, and I missed the first waterspot on top of Joux Verte. Halfway I had the chance to refill, but as I approached the major challenge of the day, the Joux Plane, they were also empty for quite some time. I was desperate for water, but the next stop would be on top of the Joux Plane, about a thousand vertical meters from where I was. I had no option but to go for it. The pace dropped gradually and I was almost crawling in the end, counting down the kilometers to the top. Endlessly.
After I finally managed to get to the top, it was all easy from there on. A long descent to Morzine and a short climb to the Lac de Moriand. I finished around 30th place, not bad at all.
