“I was taking an exam the day I left. I went straight from the university, in the clothes I was wearing. I wanted to stay alive and complete my education.”
Jacob has been forced to flee South Sudan twice in his life, but never renounced his ultimate goal: to finish school and obtain a degree that would allow him to help his community. At 32, he graduated as an economist from Gambela University, and now looks forward to pursuing a masters degree, hoping that when peace is restored in South Sudan, he can contribute to rebuilding his country.
“When I return home to South Sudan I can help the community and the country. We need resources to be distributed equally, with a plan and programme. The key areas that need more inclusion need to be identified so that they benefit the communities and nation as a whole. This is how I can, as an economist, contribute to rebuilding my country.”
Jacob received a DAFI scholarship from the German government which helped to pay for the fees and books: “Going to university is very important; education is a tool to change the world. It is the best way to create more understanding amongst people and a sense of cooperation.” —————————————————-
Since 2000, 900 young refugees in Ethiopia have been able to say yes to their future through the DAFI university scholarship programme sponsored by the German Government. Dusting off dreams of becoming doctors, engineers, teachers or lawyers, and setting them on a path to thrive as the future change-makers of their countries of origin or asylum.
In 2016 this was boosted by the Ethiopian Government's significant changes to pledges to improve opportunities for their 900,000 refugees, include increasing education enrolment and providing university graduates with work permits.
