Joanna Rees  Instagram is a visual diary of my life and runs. Canadian living in New York. 13.1 1:46:05, 26.2 3:44:19, 60k 5:50:58, Comrades 10:06:20

Yesterday I ran my third Walt Disney World Marathon and second Dopey Challenge. What I love about this event is it’s the only time you’ll time you’ll hear people say they “only” ran the marathon. Because the greater challenge would be to have run the Goofy Challenge: Half & Full over two days or Dopey Challenge: 5k, 10k, Half, & Full over four days.

The WDWM attracts endurance athletes for these challenges and is a unique running community blend of hardcore runners and back of the packers that appreciate Jeff’s Galloway’s run/walk method.

The marathon can be a challenge to train for as it’s a test of your fall marathon stamina and speed retention. Before the race I’d only run a few short long runs and had not completed any speed work. In fact my last fast run was the Revel Canyon City Marathon on November 4th.
However, adrenaline is my drug of choice and that carried me over the highways and through the Disney parks until mile 21. After that I began to slow by 15-20 seconds per mile and finished in 3:57:23 with a 9.03 pace. Disney has a lot of turns so I ran 26.70 according to Garmin but still appreciated the music and entertainment throughout the course.

The biggest challenge with Dopey was the early 3am alarm for the 5:30am race starts. The lack of sleep along with the increasing race distance was a grind over four days. Not sure if I’ll run Dopey again but the marathon is one of my favorites ❤️❤️❤️#disneymarathon #rundisney #womensrunningcommunity #runningcommunity #nyflyers

Had a great time at the 2018 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend Dopey Challenge. My race strategy was to run the 5k at marathon pace, take the 10k easy, run/walk the half as slowly as possible and then race the full. #rundisney #waltdisneyworldmarathon #wdwmarathon

2017 was a fun year of running. Ran 6 marathons including the Long Island Marathon-oops must have misplaced the medal in my move back to Hell’s Kitchen. It was a very forgettable marathon anyway 😉. Survived the swim of NYC Tri and completed my first triathlon. Went to Cambodia to see Angkor Watt for the Angkor Empire Marathon. Completed two marathons in two days over two coasts with the Revel Canyon City Marathon and TCS New York City Marathon. Finished my fourth NYRR 60K and placed third in my age group. My favorite half marathon of the year was the NYRR NYC Half and I’m not looking forward to the new course. 2018 will be a year of new challenges! ❤️❤️❤️#newchallenges #2018

We ran five miles in 15 degree F/ -9 C weather and then plunged. Here I am with the best cold weather running/plunging partner Manasi. Happy New Year!!! Best wishes for a wonderful 2018!!! #newyearsday #polarbearplunge

2017 was a year of endings and new beginnings. A long term relationship concluded, I ran three marathons in two weeks, Mom passed away, and I finished the PhD. However, what made the year remarkable were the wonderful new friends that came into my life. Thank you so much. Every month I met so many incredible people who enriched each day and brought much joy and happiness. It was also amazing to reconnect with family and old friends. Thank you again! How do you measure a year? Through love and the people you choose to share it with. Here’s to a very happy 2018! Much love, Joanna. One of my goals in 2018 is to work more on strength and cross training. Enjoyed the Pursuit: Build with Warren Perry and Metcon3 with Lisa Raphael at Equinox. #crosstraining #strengthtraining #equinox #metcon3 #thepursuit

Many thanks to Jeanhie who treated us to this wonderful meal at Hwa Yuan on Christmas Day. We also enjoyed delicious desserts at Caffe Palermo in Little Italy. #christmasday #chinesefood #littleitaly

There is something very comforting about cooking healthy food at home. Got an Instant Pot, rice cooker, and new Breville toaster oven. Made some tasty chili, rice, enjoyed the leftovers, and some more air fried fries with kale. #healthyeating #instantpot #breville

Windy long runs chasing the sunset along Hudson River Park. It’s a challenge to run 20 miles in December but I got it done on Christmas Eve. #longrun #hudsonriverpark #christmaseverun

One of my resolutions in 2018 is to eat healthier food and make more meals at home. Here I am making olive oil air fried chicken and fries with my Go-Wise air fryer. #airfryer #gowise #healthyfood #homecooking

Some favorite works of art from a visit to the MOMA over Thanksgiving weekend. Is it technology? Fashion? Culture? Sex? Art? All of the above? #moma #technology #fashion #sex #art

One of the best parts of 2017 was getting to spend time with my wonderful sister Amy! We worked hard to come together and celebrate life through Mom’s passing. Looking forward to the future and many fun visits to come. #sisterlylove #amy
