Recapturist  Vintage Sign Photographer & Micro-Historian of the American Roadside

Premiere Lanes (Santa Fe Springs, CA) — This is the first new image I’ve produced in a while and I'm pretty excited to share it with you guys. I was going back through the shots I’d taken of this sign back in 2012 in preparation for an upcoming group exhibit at the Museum of Neon Art (more details to come) and this one really caught my eye. I typically shy away from straight-on shots but this ones definitely an exception… there’s always room for an exception. Viewing it from this angle reminds me of a wise old man standing with his head held high knowing that he has lived a meaningful life. I think such an analogy is spot-on in this case. Oh, and check out the hashtag #rcpt268 if you want to see my other shots of this sign. #vintagesigns #neon #signgeeks

A little something that found its way to me this week. #googie #vegas

Thanks for making #2014 a great year... and here's to all the new adventures that lie ahead.

Indianhead Motel (Chippewa Falls, WI) – I count this among the most beautiful vintage neon signs I have ever shot. I just couldn’t wait to get home and see how my photos turned out after this trip. If you are ever in the vicinity of Chippewa Falls you should really make a point of searching it out. It’s just incredible to see in person. Once I did get home, I was reminded of something I first realized long ago… that trying to uncover information about old motels like this can be a futile exercise. And although I had a difficult time digging up any history on this place, once I found the right source the information started to come in spades – thanks in so small part to a new friend I made along the way. I actually dedicated an entire blog post to this story. I encourage you to head on over and read about it at: recapturist.com/blog #vintagesigns #neon #signgeeks

Nu-Bar (Valley City, ND) – Nu-Bar and its neon sign date back to 1975, and the facade of this small bar is even more striking than this sign that hangs above the door. Details beyond the age of this sign are scarce. What I can tell you is that this place is advertised as a sports bar and is always thinking up new ways to engage and enrich the Valley City community…. everything from planning a street dance during the annual Ralley in the Valley to organizing an adult prom as “an excuse for people to have a night where they dress up in the formal and go out on the town and cut loose a little bit.” Sounds like the kind of place that any small town would be lucky to have in their downtown area. #vintagesigns #neon #signgeeks

Sky Motel (Henderson, NV) - The ghosts of this sign's past are visible if you know where to look. It's quite fascinating actually. Get the full story at www.recapturist.com #vintagesigns #neon #signgeeks

I found out last night that Roberts Shoe Store here in Minneapolis is closing after 77 years. I’ve procrastinated shooting this place but made a point to be there with my camera at sunrise this morning. Here is one of my favorite images from that shoot. All in all, it's a sad reminder that we should make a better effort to support small local, businesses whenever possible. #minneapolis #storefront #vintagesigns

A little something for the front window of the gallery. #gettingstuffdone
