If you haven’t already gathered, we have a terribly sweet tooth. One of the highlights of traveling for us is to try the sweets particular to wherever we are.Traditional Indian sweets rank very high on our list of favourite traditional sweets, and to us the PSH makes the best sweets. We were thrilled to find out that our favourite sweets from PSH are all accidentally vegan. We even found some sugar free options, which we love! However, you would be wise to double check that there is no milk, ghee, butter or milk powder in the sweets every time you buy them, just in case they change a recipe. Time for some dahi batata puri....it’s my fav snack, what’s urs???? To eat dahi batata puri in summers is a delight. As yogurt is a good coolant and tastes great with this kind of chat. Each time I dig into a dahi kachori, my memories take me back straight to my school days in Kolkata. To the chaat walla outside the Park Street Metro Station at whose stall I’d occasionally go clutching a few coins on hot sweaty afternoons on my way back from school. This would typically be on a rare day when I took the metro which was more expensive but faster than the bus back.

The elderly chaatwallah used to take kachoris and samosas or vadas from his basket and convert them into plates of magic with some dahi (curd) and chutneys. I had never had anything like that before. This was my version of a ‘magic mushroom’ in the rather disciplined life that I led.
I wonder if the old man still plies his trade 25 years later. I wonder if anyone can ever recreate that experience for me.
This one at Punjab Sweets at Bandra’s Pali Naka is nice too.

Park Street to Pali Naka, that’s quite an enduring chaat story.

PS David Chang has declared that the samosa is a dumpling too. After this, kono kotha hobe na, as they say in Kolkata, or finger on your lips!

Someone on Twitter asked me about my favourite place for samosas in Bandra yesterday.

My answer to that, and in Mumbai, without a second thought was Punjab Sweet House. The maida crust is amazingly crunchy. The potato and peas filling most demure. It combines beautifully with the sweet,
tangy & hot tamarind chutney that they give on the side. They have a constant supply of freshly fried samosas coming in at the shop. Yesterday we almost singed our tongues while having these during a Finely Chopped Bandra Breakfast Food Walk that I conducted yesterday. Patience often falls prey to greed you see.

There was a time when a samosa and 100 g jalebi from Punjab Sweets was my usual weekend breakfast. A combination I remembered from Kolkata. We used to live opposite the shop and I was a lot younger then. I’d go to the shop, buy my stash. Come home, make my coffee and enjoy the treat. I recently tried their green peas samosa and loved it too.
In Mumbai, these are often referred to as Punjabi samosas as opposed to those sold in Irani and Goan bakeries which have a minced meat filling and are smaller. The Bengali shingara is smaller too. The maida coating is often tighter and the spicing of the potato mix more intense and the texture of the potatoes inside firmer. In winter cauliflower is stuffed in. I love the Turkish/ Lebanese feta filled sambuca too and have had flat potato filled ones in Malaysia.
