My { #friyay } pick-me-up ~ A 20 year old soft Bengal Taant with Kantha embroidery, a saree appropriated from my Mom’s closet years ago. I have never been a fan of Warli inspired imagery especially on textiles. But this one has been an exception. Probably because it’s the stuff of Mommy memories and also it’s hard not to warm up to these colours and a pattern that has always reminded me of a cheery carnival! 😬

There are narrow alleys that one could still turn into in seemingly unlikely parts of Bangalore’s CBD to find a small ‘Pēte’ (Kannada for ‘bazaar’) and old buildings like this one with houses and shops that continue to be lived in. Coexisting with the new despite being glaring anomalies, they are vestiges of a past that we seem to want to erase in a tearing hurry. Hard not to wonder how much time they have left before we forget that they even existed.

The dress I am wearing was upcycled from my Ma’s 40 year old Dharmavaram silk saree that had begun to fray in a few places. My attempt at holding onto it not merely as an artifact but as something that will bear my imprint and live with me. A handwoven woolen Patola shawl and silver jewellery, old and new, from all over India layer the dress with their mismatched coherence. Much like these streets themselves. ~ { #thebengaluruseries }

Midweek { #colortherapy } with this dual toned, handwoven polycotton single Ikat saree. A chance find at a dusty Khadi Gramodyog outlet sometime back, these I later learnt are the ‘nithipindha’ (translates as daily wear) sarees of Odisha.
.
And while that knotted pallu might be trending now, I totally see the point after having finally tried it! It is perfect for work and for keeping that unpinned pallu from running astray. 😬
.
The vintage neckpiece is from Kashmir and has a Shikaara (boat) like pendant. I was told that it was most likely made for and worn by a child before me. 😊

Swipe to see how I’ve worn this saree previously.

So while we just celebrated 69 years of the Indian Constitution that was laid down to uphold our fundamental rights, there is a staggering % of women in this country who to this day don’t have access to affordable menstrual hygiene. A deep stigma continues to be associated with it. Be it the blue liquid that replaces the red blood in the advertising or that black plastic bag that your local chemist will pack it in for you. Or just the fact that most Indian men won’t even talk about it and how mensturating women are treated even today!
.
I am supporting the @donthideitperiod campaign initiated by my good friends at @nh1design that hopes to break the silence and encourage conversations about periods. You could also contribute by buying these limited edition packs available on donthideitperiod.com and @nykaabeauty All proceeds go towards setting up a low cost biodegradable sanitary pad manufacturing unit in Ajmer by @thebetterindia and @aakarinnovations
Let’s start talking!

And in today’s { #festivedressing } ~
A nine motif Telia design silk Ikat top + an old mystery weave in gossamer silk cotton that looks Assamese inspired but is most likely woven in Bengal.

Swipe to see details. Would love to hear thoughts about what kind of a saree this is.

The Tabebuias are abloom in the Ooru. These fairly short lived bursts of pink lasting Dec -Jan have always signaled change: of a year gone by and the start of a shiny new one, the onset of spring, warmer weather and hope.
.
A species from South America that came with the British in the late 1800s, infact the first Tabebuia brought to India is believed to have been introduced in Bangalore! It was planted extensively around the city 30 years ago by SG Neginhal, a former Indian Forest Service officer who is credited with having designed a pioneering urban forestry drive that blessed Bangalore with its famous tree cover. While that maybe now rapidly dwindling the flowering trees remain the brightest symbols of hope that the people who still love this city have for it.
.
Celebrating all of that seemed like a good enough occasion to get dressed up and spend a morning under these pink canopies. Ceremonial enough to even bring out a saree that I wore to church to get married in this very city many moons ago! 😊

A 25-30 year old silk saree with thread work. Since this one ticked off many of the characteristics of a ‘pooja saree’ but wasn’t evidently one given it’s unlikely color palette I had enquired around of it’s origins. And I was told this was an attempt by a weaving cluster in Sevoor, near Arani in Tamil Nadu to recreate a pooja saree but they ended up with this interpretation where the typically perfect squares of the pooja saree grid became rectangles instead and even the border was a variation of the original. Nonetheless they became hugely popular at the time and these light weight silks were in great demand I believe, even replicated by others.
.
One of the many gems from my mother’s closet which we had always assumed to be a Kanchi saree and an absolute favorite of mine growing up! This was me today fiddling with the drape of the pallu and I have to say am still undecided as to which I like better. A printed silk floral crop top decided it had to be part of this exercise. 😊
