☇Exercise Arsenal ☇- the front squat is one of the "must develop" exercises for the mountain biker. The "specificity" of any exercise is judged by how useful it is to the individual athlete in terms of performance improvments in sport and how readily transferable those improvments are. For the MTB athlete the front squat is very much a must do.
Categorising or classifying an exercise can be made easier by digging into what it demands and what it develops!
The front squat, in it's many variations, demands mobility, control and strength across key muscular sub-systems and movement synergies that mean it provides clear improvments in performance potential for any athlete. Thoracic extension, hip flexion, ankle mobility and stability, wrist and arm flexibility etc.... On the backside of the same page the exercise develops, when loaded, serious strength qualities in the hips, legs, back and shoulders that mean when you can comfortable front squat you are likely less injury prone and more fluid in movement signatures on the bike but can then use the exericse to develop strength qualities that lead to clear improvments in everything on the bike from sprinting to steep trail endurance, taking big hits and reducing Arm pump!
