I'm looking through some past photos and it still amazes me how my camera gets me into rooms with people that I would never otherwise have access to. In the current educational climate of high-stakes math, English, and science testing, I hope that our society doesn't forget to educate our children in the arts. The power of art goes beyond what can be expressed in a standardized test score. Tests can't measure the life-changing power of a poem, story, song, photo, dance, drawing, painting, or sculpture for both the creator of the art and its consumer.
After nearly 20 years of teaching, mentoring, and helping scores of students get to college, today was the first time that I EVER got to see one of my mentees receive their degree in person. I present to you, DR. SHEMIKA BROOKS.
When I met @believeinlee, her only initial value to me was as @zeusbooth_'s little sister. Eight years later she's graduating from Rutgers as one of my all-time favorite students and mentees. Don't let the pretty smile fool you, she's a warrior with strength that few can match. I'm very proud of you. Congrats, kid! #classof2017#rutgers#brochurepose#graduation
