This is the story of me!
This very sign that once hung in my office where I was employed as a school counsellor for years working alongside at-risk children, youth and their families in Alberta. And now, this sign hangs in the pie.ology kitchen. In the end, it became a mantra for my own life. This is the story of moving to Thunder Bay and not finding any work in my field. The story of finally getting a job at the Salvation Army on Red River Road, and then a second job with a local agency, but saying no to both minimum wage and later, unstable contract positions with no benefits. This is the story of drawing upon all my life experiences, some joyful and some not so joyful to create a business that I believed could be successful to make ends meet. Because it's never just been about the pies. There are so many magic ingredients in pie.ology ✨
This is the story of practicing practicing practicing a recipe. Because, no one taught me the art of pie. This is the story of growth, of change, of self preservation. Of deep sadness, of joy, of recognizing when something isn't working, of celebrating all that is. As any person working in the food industry knows, the struggle IS real. We all have a story of how and why we started and this is mine. Yesterday it was my great honour to be the Keynote Speaker at @confederationcollege as I presented my story to 100 incredible youth from across Ontario. I can only hope that my words sparked a fire in their hearts as I delivered my message that ***YES, anything is possible and you CAN choose your own path*** 🔥
