Bruce Lipsky  Photojournalist. Native Floridian. Grandfather. What's next? #Tintypes Jacksonville, Florida.

#tbt Passing through #Virginia on my way to #CampTintype in #NewYork.

John Coffer’s Camp Tintype was great. You get a tremendous amount of instruction and experience in just three days. Came home with a dozen plates, could have done more. I’ll get better at varnishing, I promise. #Tintype #wetplate #collodion #johncoffer #ambrotype @jhall4945 #modelA #ford

Straight out of the fixer our class photo by John Coffer. It was also shot on hobo tin. #Tintype #wetplate #collodion #johncoffer #ambrotype @jhall4945 #modelT #modelA #Ford

My portrait of John Coffer at his lab desk where he mixes his chemistry for wet plate photography. Two things about this plate. The first is the warm tones, they are created by the potassium cyanide he mixes for the fixer. Second this is shot on hobo tin, which he cut from a cookie tin then painted with Black Japan. #Tintype #wetplate #collodion #johncoffer #ambrotype @jhall4945

Coffer brought a Model T and an A up to his cabin just in case we needed something else to shoot. Model T’s were painted by dipping them in Black Japan which is the same coating used to prepare a metal plate of tintypes. #Tintype #wetplate #collodion #johncoffer #ambrotype @jhall4945 #modelT #modelA #Ford

On day two we moved to 4 x 5 and 5 x 7 plates and the process became more manageable for me. Holding a larger plate in the waiter tray style while pouring was much less clumsy. #tintype #wetplate #collodion #johncoffer #ambrotype @jhall4945

Coffer moved us onto glass quarter plates, 3.25 x 4.25 inches, to do our first ambrotype. We cut the glass then ground the sides and corners. When pouring the collodion you’re trying to keep the back as clean as possible. Later after they are fixed, dried and varnished we hand painted the backs. This is a quick scan. I should have put something dark behind it that’s the light coming through streaks on the rear of the plate. #tintype #wetplate #collodion #johncoffer #ambrotype @jhall4945

We began pouring collodion on quarter plates, 3.5 x 4.25 inches. Coffer advocates for the waiter tray method of holding the plate on your fingertips as you pour the collodion. I had a hard time controlling the chemicals on the small plates. After you pour the plate you give it a few seconds to setup before dunking the plate into the silver bath for three minutes. After the sand in the hour glass egg timer has emptied from top to bottom you remove the plate under safe light and load it into the plate holder. There are a ton of options for things to shoot at Camp Tintype but you need something still since you’re making exposures from five to 20 seconds. #tintype #wetplate #collodion #johncoffer #ambrotype @jhall4945

Late night varnishing of my first ambrotype by headlamp. Coffer the guru of all things wet plate described my varnishing technique as “abysmal.” Sadly he was not wrong. #tintype #wetplate #collodion #johncoffer #ambrotype @jhall4945

The fun begins as #johncoffer and @jhall4945 (the other half of the class) head into the field to shoot a wet plate. #tintype (this picture is the #Hipstamatic app) #wetplate #collodion #johncoffer #ambrotype @jhall4945

Welcomed by chickens, cows and horses. Back on the grid after spending a week traveling to #CampTintype in Upstate New York. Full report and samples to come. #tintype (this picture is the #Hipstamatic app) #wetplate #collodion #johncoffer #ambrotype @jhall4945 #chicken
