From Quills to Paper Crowns: Celebrate the Bard at Houston Shakespeare Festival’s Kids Day
Join HSF at Phoenicia Specialty Foods on Saturday, July 22 for a morning of arts and crafts.
Grab the family and dive into the wonderful world of Shakespeare with the first ever Houston Shakespeare Festival’s (HSF) Kids Day this weekend.
On July 22, join the folks responsible for bringing top-quality Shakespeare productions to Houston each summer at Phoenicia Specialty Foods for fun Bard-themed arts and crafts. From 9 – 11 am, kids will have the chance to decorate crowns, snap photos in Shakespearian garb, create quill pens, build pretzel swords, design cookie coats of arms and more. There will even be a broadsword from one of HSF’s upcoming productions on site.
Kids Day is a natural extension of HSF’s community focus, says their Director of Outreach Cori Stevenson. Since 1975, HSF has presented two free plays at the Miller Outdoor Theatre each summer in an effort to share the spectrum of Shakespeare’s work – from classic tragedies to whimsical comedies – with Houston. This season, HSF offers the best of both worlds. One of Shakespeare’s best villains comes to life in “Richard III,” while “Twelfth Night” takes the audience on a high-spirited romantic romp. “We’re committed to bringing Shakespeare’s voice to the community and are excited to offer our first Kids Day,” says Stevenson. “We hope to see lots of new faces this weekend!” HSF’s 2017 season kicks off on July 28 and runs through August 6. Learn more at HSF’s website and stop by Phoenicia’s downtown location this Saturday to start celebrating the Bard.
