Media interview: "Well umm ok... you didn't get the part in either #Jumanji nor #TheRampage movie. So, #Dwayne (is this even your real name), tell me... have you thought to cut loose, run down the freeway, climb a few tall buildings... raise a little hell? You know... show #Hollywood #casting they made a huge mistake... that YOU are the ultimate #badass! Or... would you rather just sit here and #pout at me? #Thinkaboutit." #Knowyourworth. #Neversettle. #Hellyeah, Imgonna. @natgeocreative @natgeofineart @therock

Like night and day. Remains of a tram station photographed in dramatic late day light in a mining town that became a #ghosttown in 1939. Being a sucker for great light, I went in for a closer look... forgetting there are a lot of hidden dangers in old #mining camps. Have you ever had one of those experiences that changes your #perspective / outlook on #life forever? Or experienced such a cataclysmic #mind shift that your whole understanding changes to the sound of a different #drum? Or how about encountering someone / something that catapults you into a new "dimension," as they say? As if awakening the dragon in #you (or them). It was an arduous #climb to the upper #mountain ruins hanging precariously along steep cliffs above Cunningham Gulch. For those of us who live at sea level it can be difficult to breathe comfortably while exercising vigorously at 10,000 ft, so a relaxed pace with plenty of rest, snacks, and fluids is key to a healthy hike. What about cowbells? Bring them. Make a lot of #noise. On this trip, our set got left at #home. Enter Mountain Lion, also commonly referred to as cougar, panther, and #puma, it has long evoked #mystery, #fear, #respect, and fascination. Predators at the top of the food chain. Encounters at distances of less than 50 yards (46 m) where the #animal is staring intensely and hiding, accompanied by crouching and creeping, it is likely assessing the chances of a successful attack. For you, maintaining eye contact is a must. Looking around for an escape route comes to mind, just don't do it. Maintain that eye contact... as if engaging in a foolhardy grand game of chicken. It works (I'm 3 for 3). On the #hike down, we came across his ultimate target: deer. Days later, #wildlife officials reminded us to avoid the lowlight hours of dawn and dusk, especially in remote ghost towns. Duh. More importantly, you're always going to be on the mountain lion's turf. From the rain forests of #BritishColumbia to the southwestern deserts, as well as above timberline in the Andes, they have one of the broadest geographic distributions of any land mammal in the #Western Hemisphere. @natgeocreative @natgeofineart

Situated at 12,000 ft elev, this dilapidated property in California Gulch consists of seven #mining claims, located above the ghost town of Animas Forks. Founded 1875, Animas Forks is a historic mining town at the confluence of the east and west forks of the Animas River. The town boomed during the 1880s, resulting from extensive hard-rock silver and gold mining, until 1891 when fire destroyed 14 of the 30 buildings and left the town virtually #abandoned. With construction of the Frisco Mill in 1912, the town once again prospered but was abandoned after another large fire a year later... the town officially became a ghost by the mid-1920s. Only harsh winters and high winds slowly took their toll on the remaining buildings, destroying all but the nine left today. // My first visit was April 2004 at a time when snowdrifts rose 8 ft above #mytourig. The local sheriff cautioned that the #backroads would be difficult and that it would be best to wait until the snow melts in May. Well, I only had another week before the next assignment (overseas) and I had been frothing at the mouth for two years wanting to photograph these structures... so you just have to go, right? Arriving, your only access to photograph any of the buildings was to climb the ice-packed drifts and once atop the hard-packed winter wonderland, the combination of thin air and glare of the sun reflecting off the snowy surface was cause for dizziness. A second visit in October 2009 found many more abandoned structures and at higher elevations. A few months later I learned that work was underway to preserve Animas Forks' buildings. While I applaud these efforts, the authentic #creepy ghost town appeal was soon to be lost... until, perhaps, this tourism boom and bust cycle abandons itself due to future #Insta finds. Today, both the nearby Mill and the Bagley Tunnel are listed on the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties making it eligible for Colorado Historical Fund grants as well as tax credits for restoration. The #ruins and property are currently listed for sale at $375,000. A great view... but beware: the air is #thin. @natgeocreative

🇺🇸 USA 📍#Oregon
The town of Brothers. Located in eastern Oregon's central high desert, this structure served as a roadside restaurant and motel. I came here to tie-in details of a story I had researched from my travels in the Klondike.* The area north of Brothers is where the legendary #Klondike Kate had her homestead after she left the Yukon goldfields in 1914. After spending several years in this central Oregon area, she moved to the Willamette Valley (Oregon) where she died in 1957. Upon written instruction, she requested that her ashes be scattered on her old homestead near Brothers. After many years of legal questions, her ashes were brought by an anonymous stranger and scattered according to her wishes.
Of the town's origin, one source claims that the name comes from several families of brothers who settled in the area, including the Stenkamp Brothers, while another notes that there was a local Three Brothers Sheep Camp, named for three nearby hills that had the Three Sisters mountains looming behind them. Vast tracts of uninhabited land covered with sagebrush surround Brothers, which are often used for model and high power rocket launches by Oregon Rocketry which has one of the highest FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) airspace waivers in the US at 35,500 ft (10,800 m).

#Geometry, subject and light. All three are needed for a successful image, be it #landscape or almost anything else. Even a freshly plowed field can be evocative when it’s in as #geometric a locale as The #Palouse. @natgeocreative @natgeofineart

“Acting is playing - it's actually going out on a playground with the other kids and being in the game, and I need that. Writing satisfies that part of #myself that longs to sit in my room and dream.” -Billy Bob Thornton. @natgeocreative @natgeofineart The Beach Boys say it best with their ballad "In My Room." Even after a million listens, this short, beautiful song still has such power. I am humbled by its majesty.
