For writer @linseyrendell, Plastic Free July has offered a chance to uncover the hidden plastic that sneaks into our daily lives. Head to the site to read her day-by-day take on the reality of giving plastic the heave-ho (and some of the places it lurks may surprise you)...

This #plasticfreejuly it seems even the supermarkets are listening, with @colessupermarkets and @woolworths_au both announcing a plan to phase out single-use plastic bags in their stores. Whilst it's not a perfect solution (thicker, multi-use plastic bags will still be available to purchase at the checkout), it's a step in the right direction that'll hopefully make consumers much more likely to remember their reusable bags before leaving the house. The next step is to have the ban enforced at a state level right across Australia - so far only South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT have done the deed (though Queensland's ban comes into effect next year). We like to think that in an ocean somewhere, turtles are giving each other some cautious (and very slow) high fives... [📷 @thejulietreport]

As #plasticfreejuly rolls on, we're throwing it right back to the Autumn 2016 issue of Peppermint – where @therogueginger spilled the bulk-bought beans on her plastic-free, no waste life. Hop over to the link in bio to read why Erin believes recycling is simply a bandaid, and find out how a zero-waste lifestyle really is an achievable goal. 👊

As NAIDOC Week events happen across the country, it's a chance for everyone to come together and celebrate the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In Issue 34 of Peppermint we spoke to Quandamooka artist @leeceecarmichael, who uses her contemporary painting and weaving techniques to capture her connection to country and place. If you've not yet grabbed your copy, snap one up and read all about this inspirational artist (and lucky Brisbane-ites can see her work in person at her Connecting Waves exhibition, which runs from 5 July - 5 August at @onespacegallery).

Showcasing ten Indigenous designers from across Queensland, the 5th annual CIAF Fashion Performance will be taking Cairns by storm next Friday night. The event’s just one part of the always-impressive Cairns Indigenous Art Fair, which runs from 14-16 July, and we’ve got a pair of tickets for Friday’s fashion extravaganza to give away! Simply email before this Thursday 6th July at 3pm, with the subject line ‘CIAF,’ for your chance to win.
