Our next J&L Collection selection is a stunning 1893 Isabella quarter graded MS68+. on display at the ANA! This coin was struck for the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893 and depicts Isabella I of Castile who sponsored Columbus’ voyage to the New World. The head of the Board of Lady Managers, socialite Betha Palmer, wanted a woman to design the coin and hired sculptor Caroline Peddle. Unfortunately, the mint director had issues with Peddle’s design, and after delays and further disagreements she ended up resigning. Charles Barber begrudgingly took over the project, and derisively called the commemoratives “showy quarters”.

Our next example from the J&L Collection of classic silver commemoratives is a 1935 half dollar commemorating the 300th anniversary of the founding of Connecticut graded PCGS MS68. I like this one for its 1930s stylings, just look at that stately Art Deco eagle!

Something for Toner Tuesday from the J&L Collection. Check out this blazing PCGS MS68+ 1926 Oregon Trail Memorial commemorative half dollar! See this amazing coin in person at the World’s Fair of Money this week in Philadelphia!

This week we’ll be featuring selections from the J&L Collection, a complete set of US silver commemoratives which we will have on display this week at the American Numismatic Association’s World Fair of Money in Philadelphia. Our first selection is this magnificent 1937 Battle of Antietam commemorative Half Dollar graded PCGS MS68+.

Hello, Philadelphia! PCGS is here for the biggest coin show of the year!

On! Sail On! In honor of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition the US Mint in San Francisco created a variety of commemorative coins. The Mint also struck this silver medal (HK-399 PCGS MS65) sculpted by Robert Ingersoll Aitken. Aitken, in addition to producing the “Fountain of Earth” at the Exposition, also designed the $50 gold Pan-Pac commemorative. He sculpted monuments all over the nation, but perhaps his most enduring work is the West Pediment of the United States Supreme Court building. This medal design can also be found in bronze and gilt, and is an intriguing and artistic piece of early 20th century Americana.
