Happy Earth Day! Here’s to pausing and admiring how incredible our planet really is.

Sweet Chestnut pattern I found in a woodland in Southern England.

I’m slowly figuring out a plan for managing all of my crazy interests a little better, with less stress, and more spontaneity. I’m finishing a few projects that have long been in the works, and beginning some that are long overdue— so that feels good.
.
I got monologuing the other day at a student that had asked me about what was better— working for yourself or for someone else. And of course, I droned on and on about how liberating, but stifling, but exciting, but complex, but thrilling, but irritating the self-employed life can be. I had very little to say about 9-5s except that I haven’t had one since 2006, and that it might not be the best fit for me right now. And then I went home and thought about what I had said.
.
Interesting.
.
So I’m about to work on some self-inflicted projects in a moment but I’m procrastinating because I just want some space from my laptop for a second and I want to pretend like I have a “lunch break.” (Which is a terrible lie I have been telling myself for years). It’s all one big project, really.

This little earthstar fungi was found behind a shed amongst an incredible range of little twigs, moss and needles. This is the first time I’d ever seen fungi like this and, of course, the pattern the ground made behind it was just too good of a texture to ignore.
.
My absolute favorite thing to do while traveling is to take a closer look at the ground when I’m exploring. For me, it’s easy to get lost in all of the little things happening underfoot. Especially when nature is so good at making the best patterns and textures.

I watched a movie last night about long winters and all I could think about was “Looks cold. Looks familiar.” But! I’m not complaining! It just makes the little bit of color seem that much more special peeking out of the snow.
.
I took a walk with the dogs around the neighborhood a moment ago and the colors are pretty interesting, lots of yellows and ochres and greys and browns. And the white of the remaining snow, which there is still plenty of.
.
I considered taking a photo on my walk but as I looked around at the mushy street, I ended up just skipping past big puddles, squishing over little patches of grass, and avoiding soaking my shoes wherever possible. It was an active endeavor that required full attention.
.
Instead, I’ll post this photo of the last leg of Scotland’s beautiful Fairy Pools (#isleofskye) — which eerily shares the colors of Minneapolis Springtime! I got to visit last fall to catch the moody end of the season.

Love seeing everyone’s #artvsartist posts. Though most of my work is under NDA and I can’t share it as much as I’d like, most of my favorite things to make are always dense natural patterns and foliage. It’s a lot of fun seeing people’s obsessions via their work. Mine are certainly apparent!

Rainbows of color forever and ever. .
I took this photo at sunset in Meteora, Greece. The tiny town below is Kalampáka— quiet, friendly, and with cheap coffee and amazing spinach pies. Meteora is a mountainous area hosting old Byzantine era monasteries filled with gilded paintings and incredible woodwork. You can ascend the cliffs and visit the remaining six working monasteries or quietly look out over the landscape.
.
One of my favorite things is to find rainbows in interesting arrangements. My second favorite thing is to get up high enough to see the atmosphere in the distance color the land. In Minnesota, I rarely get to see the horizon because of all of the trees (not a bad thing) - but I’m happy to spend any time I can get with views like this. .

Dogs barked with hoarse voices. I walked on, ignoring their calls. It was chilly enough to have to wrap my fingers tightly around the neck of my coat. I wasn’t interested in letting even a little bit of warmth escape the collar of my shirt. I’ve been wearing my hair down now for about two years— stress makes your scalp hurt, doesn’t it? Here, the wind tossed my hair into my eyes, the corners of my mouth, and across my face. I determined it was a blessing and used it as an extra scarf. I tucked the cascade of tangled waves into my shirt and kept walking on.

I hope everyone finds that bit of peace they need today.

This photo was taken in the Scottish Highlands. Just off the side of the road we saw a field with a lonely small building. The gentle sheets of rain began to dissipate and a golden light appeared over a sea of grass that reached the horizon. We pulled over and gingerly walked a slick boardwalk through wet, tall grass. In silence, we wandered toward the building in the distance. Here, next to the lonely stone structure was a tiny grove of birch trees, old trees that had survived much longer than we had. There was no one else, just the four of us. And we stayed there quietly until the drizzle began again.

Zeus is the drummer.

About to sit down with the Cosmos Tarot & Oracle second edition book and revise a bit. I’ve got a little vial of Bach’s remedies, Olive flower, next to my teapot. It says “restores energy when you are physically and mentally exhausted.” And it works!
.
Know what else works to restore energy? This personal dance party I just had to Selena Gomez and Kelly Clarkson. No one’s judging.
.
Nothing but restorative vibes tonight. Let me share a little with whoever else needs some. We can do this!
.
Thanks to @mosswoodland for this nice photo of me at Avebury stone circle in England. It was full of that amazing energy that I’m trying to harness tonight!

I gave a lecture last night about art licensing @lightgreyartlab and a big part of the talk was about authenticity and potential.
.
It’s about that time of year when I get antsy and wonder why I can’t do more during the short days. As my birthday gets closer I fall into: “what did I even accomplish this year?” This is usually followed by a grey cloud and a lot of silent stewing over endless coffees.
.
After the lecture last night, I stayed to speak with a past student about the exact same thing.
.
I can’t understand why dissatisfaction creeps in for many of us, but I know those thoughts are productive in their own way. Dissatisfaction, for all of it’s annoying qualities, promotes motivation to change and grow away from one place, and toward another.
.
I really believe being creative is about taking advantage of the potential to innovate— building concepts and choosing to move a bit to move closer to where you want to be. We can thank dissatisfaction for the perspective it provides, I suppose.
.
This photo was taken along one of the lochs in Scotland this fall. Always such a sucker for rainbow patterns in nature. The others were taken by Jenny Wells during my lecture last night! Thanks, Jenny! @jennywellsstudio
