#Deq tattoos, made with breast milk and ashes, used to be common on the bodies of #Kurdish women in #Turkey and #Syria. The tradition has mostly died out. The different #symbols have a variety of purposes: beauty, ward off evil, attract good, identify with a tribe. Some were even said to represent images from non-Islamic religions. This photo is of a grandmother in a nomadic Kurdish family in Turkey.
