So—I don't much like news pegs for The Downtown Writers Jam #podcast, but with Virginia Democrats, blackface, and sexual assault allegations in the news, I just wanted to post this interview with my friend + author Woody Lewis. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Here's why—I've known Woody for nearly 20 years, since my days at WIRED. (It's all in the podcast.) But we've really bonded in the last decade over watching elections together, online. Particularly the election of Barack Obama. And particularly because Virginia went blue.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
If you listen—and I hope you do because Woody is absolutely somebody you should be listening to—you'll hear an amazing story about Virginia, slavery, his family. But more important than that—you'll hear a story about how he's struggled with his identity in so many areas. ⁣

He's really one of the smartest people I know. But what I've carried with me since we did this interview back in December: how many layers we carry with us.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And today as I watched the news scroll, all I could think about was Woody. Not because he had anything to do with any of it, but because everything his story is tied up in what's happening.⁣

And we learn—I learn, you learn—because we know people, we listen to people, and we can experience lives we didn't live⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So my #GenX sensibility generally says, "Don't promote this shit too much. WHO CARES." But if you only listen to one of my podcasts, listen to Woody.⁣

(Also: listen to Keri Leigh Merritt, Too Black, and Angela Jackson-Brown. But maybe start with Woody.)⁣⁣
