The polar vortex hit Pittsburgh so I lit some candles, made some tea, and fired up the latest Audible Original THE LAST DAYS OF AUGUST.⁣

This particular story wasn't actually a book. Instead, Audible stitched together a series of podcasts done by Jon Ronson as he explored the suicide of adult film star August Ames.⁣

He came to the story thinking it was about one thing (cyberbullying), but quickly found the threads took him elsewhere (mental health in the porn industry).⁣

The story never quite finds a cohesive narrative thread, but to be fair this type of story doesn't really have a beginning, middle, and end. Instead, he's piecing together bits and pieces of August's life through the lens of people who themselves are badly damaged.⁣

That structure made it difficult to follow at times since the interviews felt redundant and the narrative story would grind to a halt. (But I did like the not-so-subtle digs he took at true crime podcasts that treat its subjects only as narrative tools.)⁣

While not my favorite Original, I did like that it broke from what is fast becoming a standard, serial podcast. ⁣
