Mobility becomes Maintenance
—-
The hot topic of discussion in my Yoga Teacher Webinar Program is how to teach a progression to 20 different students with 20 different capacities. The answer is information. Mobility practice is sending and receiving information back and forth to the Central Nervous System. The students receives feedback on what’s going on with the joints and the nervous system gets feedback on what capacities you’re looking to acquire.

If you’ve been to any of my yoga classes we always begin with preparatory exercises for joints we’ll be using. Something like wrist work to prepare for arm support positions... For a new student that has never placed their bodies weight in the wrists this becomes specific mobility work. For a student that has been doing this work for a while this may turn into maintenance (maintaining the mobility) and preparation for more stress and complexity later on in the practice.

Teachers might have the idea that advanced means skip over this “basic” stuff but I think it’s quite the opposite with how I view the purpose for practice. Advanced is communication and listening and in this way everyone in your class can be participating in accordance with their own capacities. Advanced students have long term visions and view preparatory work as an essential foundation for realizing their goals.

A teacher provides these principles both in what they say but just as importantly how they structure practice.
