NEW YEARS RESOLUTION: SHOWING STALE RELATIONSHIPS THE DOOR.
—-
A fascinating new exploration for me in approaching my business is seeing the value in driving stale relationships out the door. I used to think if one student didn’t like my class the world was ending. And every student and every person that moved on from me was a direct reflection on my value as a teacher. I spent more time and energy then I’d like to admit fixating on why and how to get these 5 people back that I assumed didn’t like me. It didn’t matter how many other people resonated with my approach. I saw the ones that got away as proof of my shortcomings and needed them back. Imagine how this drove my behavior?

Now relate this to what goes on with social media where so many are seeking more likes and followers. Social media gurus run ads offering to help you build and what they really mean is buy you’re following. But whether you have 10 or 10 thousand they’re just numbers. How many meaningful interactions come from it? And even if you get the results you’re looking for are you being real or are you hiding behind curated pictures and captions?

@ryanorrico is the first person I heard speak out about how it’s not only messed up (to seek validation through likes and followers) but it’s actually bad for your business. Because if you’re so hung up on pleasing the masses then you’re not developing what makes you special and you’re not developing relationships with those that see it. You’re burning energy dragging around people that are half inspired by a fake version of you. In business do you want 100 customers that are totally in with what you’re doing or 10,000 followers that don’t take any action when you ask them to?

I should finish this post by mentioning that if I’m not meeting your expectations, if I’m not contributing or adding value to your life then you’d be doing us both a favor by unsubscribing, unfollowing, or changing the terms of our relationship. If you’re still with me I want to say that I truly appreciate it and I’m excited about becoming clearer on how I want to use this medium to foster real connections. Happy New Year 👊👊
