These beautiful people pictured here + Lynn Obath are Black.Arts.Gold, the new Black Arts collective at Goldsmiths, University of London. Last night we hosted Groundings in Black Performance & Art: Praxes, Politics & Pedagogies; a night of performance & inquiry supported by English PEN and the Theatre & Performance Department.
My thoughts are falling over each other in my mind because there is so much that I want to tell you about last night. I watched DeAira Hermani, Chinasa Vivian Ezugha, Abu Ansari and I as we charted space for ourselves & the community gathered to listen & dialogue with each other about art, identity & Blackness.
We were joined by Dr. Osita Okagbue Head of the Theatre Department and Professor Gail Babb of Applied Theatre who offered us deep insight into the necessity of creating new epistemologies that can speak to African and diaspora artists. Excitement bubbles deep within me & I am reminding myself to breathe as my feet stay planted on the ground & my spirit leaps for joy. More to come.
