You’ve seen these acronyms thrown around in the fitness world and it probably seems like a totally foreign language! Fitness is meant to be easy, right??

Well let me clear things up:
——
NEAT- Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis: The energy you burn doing daily tasks. The more active your job/ daily tasks the more calories you need.
——
BMR- Basal Metabolic Rate: The energy you burn just for being alive even if you lay there doing nothing. Your thyroid regulates this to an extent but the main way to modulate this is by having more metabolically active tissue ie muscle.
——
EPOC-Excess Post exercise Oxygen Consumption: This is the afterburner effect of ANY exercise. This is the body consuming energy to adapt to the exercise performed, repair itself and restore itself to its resting state.
——
LISS- Low Intensity Steady State: Long walks, jogging, running, cycling, swimming...all at a steady state.
——
HIIT-High Intensity Interval Training: Short bursts of all-out activity with defined rest periods inbetween. 1 study has shown this to be a superior method of burning subcutaneous fat (provided there is also a calorie deficit!!).
