Detail of the hand woven cane work on @nicknicknickv Chandigarh chairs. This is the second glue up, with one remaining before the chairs leave the workshop.
In brief, these chairs were designed by Pierre Jeanneret in the 1950’s. He was a cousin to Le Corbusier, architect of the master plan for the city of Chandigarh that included residential, commercial, industrial and government buildings. Jeanneret designed all manner of items for civic use including furniture and used local craftsman to create his designs.
It’s hard to believe, but at one time these chairs, and others like them, could be found dumped all around the city they were named after. Way beyond cool and hipster, these days you’ll see them inside celebrity homes, at a headlining Surry Hills restaurant and on posts from @designplusmag
We just love the way the Tassie Blackwood sings against the creamyness of the cane.
We added a curve to the back rests for added comfort and covered the exposed cane work on the back with infill. I don’t have an issue with students reproducing work as glorious as this, as long as there’s plenty of learning opportunities and they’re for personal use.
