Am I zero waste? ๐ŸŒŽ The honest truth: I'm not. Not even close ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ I admire those who are and I take inspiration from their lifestyles, but I am nowhere near there yet. I am trying to be realistic with myself and my lifestyle. My focus is on raising my awareness of my choices and being conscious in what I do consume. The amount of waste I produce now is about 1/4 of what it used to be; and the waste that I do produce, I handle with care. I try not to view what I do consume as rubbish to just be thrown away. In fact, some of the materials, such as the corrugated cardboard can go on to be used many more times when recycled. For example, with @staywildswim my new sustainable swimwear brand, we have packaged our pieces in recycled corrugated cardboard which is also 100% recyclable, as we view this as one of the most sustainable options available to us ๐ŸŒŠ I don't want to intimidate you by setting goals of never consuming a single piece of plastic or never using an item in glass again, instead just reduce, reuse and recycle. No one is perfect, but if we all come together for positive change we can make a massive impact ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’™ #zerowaste #lowwaste #reducingwaste #trashhero #beyondthebox #ad #corrugatedcardboard #reducereuserecycle

@pialily91 it is pretty crazy out there! The more small swaps we encourage the better, then hopefully wider change follows!

If it wasnโ€™t for your Living Consciously Crew Facebook group I wouldnโ€™t be half as aware about sustainability as I am now, youโ€™ve made a massive impact on my consumption. So thank you so much!

My mum, dad, brother, sister, dog and I are all driving towards being plastic free - we've already reduced our single plastics a lot by shopping at local farm shops, but we find it tough with pasta, pulses and biscuits...any tips?

Little things add up! We keep and reuse any take away plastic boxes for when we make batch amounts of food as theyโ€™re great for the perfect portion for the freezer! They can be reused for years x

Respect your effort but you travel.. alot. Flying is just about the worst thing to do. By far the biggest impact would be to stop traveling (flying) but thatโ€™s not possible considering itโ€™s kind of your job aswell๐Ÿ˜ถ

@boharmony Tampons are definitely an issue, ending up in the water or in landfill but I think most eco-conscious woman are aware of menstrual cups that are reusable. Cosmetics are not only for women, men that buy bottles of shower gels or shampoo product plastic waste too. We all have to make a change, I don't feel this is a gendered issue.

Great post Zanna! We all have to start somewhere but just starting and taking conscious responsibility for our environment is a good start.

Thatโ€™s a great message. When I first started trying to live a zero waste lifestyle I tried going cold turkey on all plastic and packaging and found it so overwhelming that it became more of a battle than feeling like I was contributing to something good. What Iโ€™ve realised is that I can start with small changes and build on them until getting close to zero waste feels like a default. I think we can be hard on ourselves and forget that weโ€™re making good choices every time we take our own bags to the supermarket or reject takeaway food that comes in a plastic container or opt to sit in a cafe and enjoy a coffee from a cup rather than getting a takeaway cup to go (thatโ€™s been my rule for the past year). Little by little, our little swaps and changes can make a big difference.

Hi @zannavandijk I come from a farm raising family that goes hunting every season and is a "fill the freezer" family. I would like to be different. I want to better myself and the planet. We bread sheep and I loved watching the lambs grow and play with them. I was wondering if going vegetarian first would be easier than going full on vegan? I am looking to eat cleaner and not use so much waste either. Any tips?

  • 20w ago cgarside90 cgarside90

@zannavandijk i have been following your content for a while & I know zero waste and sustainability are big issues to you. You should check out @thesocialsupermarket- they sell โ€œproducts with purposeโ€ (think upcycled bags, jams made from surplus, fairtrade and organic clothing, bamboo straws and reusable coffee cups supporting waste reduction). They sell products from social enterprises which helps tackle important social and environmental challenges by reinvesting money made from products back into the community. Shopping and with a good cause! Perfect for xmas! I am not involved in the company- just think itโ€™s a great idea so sharing the love!

Sustainability isn't defined as one thing, it's a multitude of different factors to come together to achieve the most desirable outcome. You've done a wonderful job at raising awareness ! You should be so proud! science doesn't define sustainability as one it includes 3 main components; environment, social and economical aspects to have all three aspects be achieved equally is almost unrealistic to be quite honest.
