We had a great question about three cents so let's take a look at a gorgeous example from the same year as yesterday's coins.

The three cent was in response to lowered postage rates in 1851. Having a single coin was much more cost effective for the Mint and convenient for the consumer. Without it a person would need three large cents, a combined 32.67 grams of copper versus the 0.75 grams of silver for a single three cent.
